Writing these days about portraits as symbols of cross-cultural diplomacy and it’s good to be reminded of these, here in the city where I live.
In 1735 Lenape leaders Tishcohan and Lapowinsa met with William Penn’s sons to resolve a land dispute. Their portraits were painted at the time by the Swedish-born artist Gustavus Hesselius. 1/4

Very excited to be presenting my paper on a French colonial novel about Jane McCrea at Princeton’s Colonial Americas Workshop next Tuesday (12/11)!
