i'm extremely tired of the narrative that Kendrick's first time doing West Coast music was on GNX - To Pimp A Butterfly is a West Coast album through and through, exploring many of Cali's historic, rich musical sounds. jazz and funk are fundamental to WC music. do the knowledge on the West Coast Get Down. cats like Terrace Martin, JAZZ MUSICIANS (!) became damn near household names in part due to their work with Kendrick. he's been putting on for the West, just not in a way that fits the box in your head.
This is a joke bro. Game Went to NY and represented heavy for the West. At a time when the west coast was gone stale commercially too. He went toe to toe with the best emcees from the East coast and screamed Compton the whole way. He collaborated and helped out any artist he could from LA. More importantly, he maintained a west coast sound. There was no mistaking where the guy was from. He repped it fully. The other guy was doing records with Taylor Swift and only resorted to a regional sound when it benefited him. Linked with dudes when it benefited him. It’s night and day.

this isn't to say To Pimp A Butterfly was his first West Coast joint either. if you have an even relatively open ear, cuts like 'Sherane,' 'm.A.A.d city,' 'The Art Of Peer Pressure,' etc are obviously WC music. not to mention mixtape cuts like 'Average Joe'

not to mention a record like 'Momma' is indebted to the then-recent LA beat scene. West Coast music is beyond just G-Funk and Nervous music and its a disservice to music history to think otherwise

“Do Me, Baby” When D’Angelo learned I didn’t like Prince ballads, he looked at me like I was an alien... It wasn’t until Prince passed away that I revisited my albums and bootlegs, realizing how much I had undervalued “Do Me, Baby.” Full List: vibe.com/features/editorial/…

On December 29, 2009, Kendrick went on ustream to promote his-then upcoming "Kendrick Lamar EP". Clips of the livestream have floated around for years, but the full version was largely considered lost until yesterday, when a YouTuber uploaded it in full youtube.com/watch?v=7BMm9ZEz…

There was a post Headhunters explosion of hip keyboardists with a cosmic remit. Dexter Wansel’s Life On Mars was a classic in a micro genre that’included Hubert Eaves, Don Blackman, Lonnie Liston Smith, Junie Morrison, Wally Badaru, Delmar Brown, & Clyde Criner amongst others 🌹
Rest in peace, Dexter Wansel… Philly soul & jazz fusion pioneer, masterful keyboardist, producer & arranger whose cosmic vision shaped the Sound of Philadelphia. From “Love T.K.O.” & “Nights Over Egypt” to the cult classic Life on Mars, his grooves left an indelible mark.

They just don't make full-service polymaths like Dexter Wansel anymore. Philly soul architect, keyboard master, electronic music pioneer, studio rat, Afrofuturist, prolific songwriter, arranger, and producer. We just lost an undeniable giant.
One of the unsung architects during the golden age of Philly Soul. RIP Dexter Wansel

For the MF DOOM fans who follow me for the anecdotes and BTS information -- I have to say if there's one recording artist that DOOM and I listened to most often, and brought up in conversation, it was Dexter Wansel. An incredible & legendary musician you should know.
