wrote a short story for this anthology, to be honest half the excitement is having literally no idea what everyone else has written and being unable to wait to find out pre-order ⬇️ readings.com.au/products/350…

some thoughts on this year’s miles franklin. last time the abc used this format it was to discuss the new beyoncé album, just to give you a rough idea how exciting this shortlist is abc.net.au/news/2024-07-02/m…

during a period of decline the best elements of any medium tend to fade. back before ‘blog post’ was a punchline it was an avenue for some cool writing, just look at Kate Zambreno’s list (from Heroines) of the kind of stuff that existed circa 2010

in his magnum opus peep show david mitchell remarked, I’ve said too much, haven’t I? Damn. Damn these lips of mine, I guess witold must have sympathised cos everyone’s lips are cursed in this one. also it is about tennis and trent reznor should do the soundtrack

I have recently read a few books by “promising young voices” in Australian literature and these books are simply not fab. A good marketing strategy is no substitute for great work! Where is the pathos, the drama, the vision? Where is our generation’s Dorothy Porter??

Zach’s review of the new Donoso translation and phenomenon of the so-called ‘Latin American Boom’ at @The_Millions is lovely, well worth reading
The greatest horror novel of all time returns! José Donoso's The Obscene Bird of Night is out today, in a new unabridged translation from @meganalimcd by @NewDirections. This novel is one of my greatest reading experiences, and it could be yours too. Do yourself a favor, read!

the paywall is down on this one – come and dissolve yourself
Replying to @Meanjin
@Meanjin has announced @_DeclanFry as the winner of the 2023 Hilary McPhee Award for his essay ‘911 Lonely: Call Me Call Me Call Me’ on the work of @MckenzieWark FAHA. Congratulations both! bit.ly/3vZPiT4

Of all the Bernhard I’ve read, this one was far and away the best: tragic and vulnerable and just burns a hole through you
Last week someone posted that they found solace in reading Bernhard after the death of their mother And I was reminded again about how much grief courses through his novels

Kristen Stewart crew assemble. Bit of a break for Katy O’Brian. Kicks off in the last quarter. If there’s an award for best use of yep as a reply in a film, give it to this one.

screwball comedy for the doom generation. squares, boomers, unlike GenX, care *too much* about folks not finding their freud & hannah arendt when they need it! (library book misshelving: it’s the pits.) honestly ADORABLE. Parker Posey: fashion icon/screwball heroine forever

my hot take is i don’t think anybody should be dating until their shit is together. eating healthy, working out regularly, having a morning routine, a spiritual practice, a therapist, financial discipline. things like that have to come first.

You wouldn’t steal a car, but you can steal 911 Lonely. I mean, you still have to read it, but we are giving you the piece! The paywall is down, the means of production are yours. It’s the existing conditions, Jim. The horizon keeps things possible. meanjin.com.au/essays/911-lo…
