🐢 A wildlife trafficker got two years in federal prison for falsely labeling 850 protected turtles as “plastic animal toys” prior to shipping them “bound and taped inside knotted socks” to Hong Kong for the illegal wildlife trade.
🐍🦎 He also attempted to ship protected snakes and lizards.
These were all violations of the federal Lacey Act, which helps prevent the export of protected wildlife.
These turtles weren't just numbers. They were native wildlife, stolen from American landscapes and packed away in brutal conditions.
A federal judge sentenced Wei Qiang Lin to 2 years in prison for smuggling hundreds of turtles to Hong Kong in packages falsely labeled as toys.
For many North American turtles, replacing a single adult taken from the wild can take decades. That's why wildlife trafficking is such a serious threat.
Thanks to the outstanding work of @USFWS Office of Law Enforcement and our federal partners, this trafficker was caught and held accountable.
If you traffic America's wildlife, our officers will find you, build the case, and bring you to justice.

Following Deniz’s tragic death, Ryder’s Law is being reintroduced.
New York City — this is the moment.
To recap, on Tuesday, a 16-year-old carriage horse named Deniz collapsed and died in Central Park while still attached to the carriage. The union says he was examined by a vet in March and found fit for duty. He will now be taken to Cornell University to determine what happened.
Deniz is the second carriage horse to die in Central Park in less than ten months. A bill called Ryder’s Law — named after that 2022 horse — would have banned horse-drawn carriages in New York City and replaced them with electric alternatives. But that bill was defeated.
