Today, the EU took another step towards Ukraine’s fast-tracked accession by opening the first cluster of accession negotiations. This once again shows how the EU is moving away from merit-based enlargement and increasingly making decisions driven by geopolitical considerations. While other candidate countries are required to meet strict conditions for years, Ukraine is being given a green light despite clearly not being ready. Meanwhile, there is little discussion about the risks. European farmers, cohesion funding and the EU budget could all become casualties of a politically driven enlargement process. Enlargement should be based on performance, preparedness and equal treatment. That is not what we are seeing in Ukraine’s case today, and it risks undermining the credibility of the EU’s enlargement policy.
EU countries have agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. Today we launch talks on the backbone of the process: including justice and fundamental rights. Enlargement is our best investment in a future of peace, security and prosperity.

Today, the Hungarian Parliament approved a constitutional amendment (“Lex Orbán”) proposed by the governing Tisza Party introducing an eight-year limit for prime ministers. It is unacceptable because it is designed to target a single political opponent and achieve one purpose only: to prevent @PM_ViktorOrban from running for Prime Minister again. In a democracy, constitutional rules must not be rewritten to exclude political rivals from competition, especially not with retroactive effect. Democracy is about free choice and fair competition, not eliminating rivals by changing the rules. Hungarian voters have the right to decide who governs them. No two-thirds majority should be allowed to take that choice away from them.

Today, the Fidesz Congress elected me as Vice President of the party. I am grateful for the renewed trust. I will do everything I can to help strengthen our political community in the fight for the soul of Hungary and Europe.

🚨 | Defending a nation’s borders is not a crime and should not be punished with fines. For that reason, the Patriots reject the EU Migration Pact.

Today, the Migration Pact enters into force. The pact is fundamentally flawed. Instead of stopping illegal migration at Europe’s external borders, it seeks to manage and redistribute it. Under its mandatory solidarity mechanism Member States are expected to take in migrants or make significant financial contributions. This is not a solution to illegal migration, instead it risks creating yet another pull factor. The previous Fidesz–KDNP government consistently rejected the pact and made it clear that Hungary would not implement it. The European Commission has already made it clear: every Member State is expected to implement the pact. There will be no exceptions. The Hungarian government continues to dodge the question. It is time to come clean. We urge the government to reject this failed pact and make it clear that Hungary will not implement it.

Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, has launched an unprecedented attack on Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok and the institution of the presidency. There is no reason for President Sulyok to resign. A new parliamentary majority is not a constitutional justification for removing a head of state. No Hungarian president has ever stepped down because of a change in government. President Sulyok has fulfilled all of his constitutional duties. There is no legal basis for his removal. The increasingly aggressive calls for his resignation seem to have only one purpose: Peter Magyar wants the position for himself. The President represents the entire nation, not any political party or government, and in a democracy cannot be removed by political pressure or force.

Today’s announcement by Magyar Péter and Ursula von der Leyen suggests that a political deal has been struck with the @EU_Commission over EU funds. But such deals always come with a price. The clearest sign? Right after the talks, Magyar Péter was already defending the failed Migration Pact. The question is what else was agreed behind closed doors beyond the Migration Pact. Will Brussels’ other long-standing demands also be implemented - on taxation, pensions, family support or energy policy? On this, there is only silence. EU funds belong to the Hungarian people. The question is at what price we will receive them. Hungarians have a right to know what commitments were made to the Commission.

The Single Market is one of the EU’s greatest achievements and the foundation of Europe’s competitiveness.  Europe has every potential to be a leading economic power. Yet today, Europe is losing competitiveness because of excessive regulation, high energy prices and failed Brussels policies.  We, the Patriots, are working for a stronger, more competitive and more successful Europe that truly protects the interests of its citizens.

We have requested the immediate termination of the Article 7 procedure against Hungary. It is clear now to everyone that the unprecedented political attacks over the past decade, disguised as rule of law concerns, were not based on facts about Hungarian democracy, but on false political narratives and ideological bias. We are also calling for the immediate release of all withheld EU funds to Hungary, as well as the suspension of the daily 1 million EUR migration fine.

The @PatriotsEP did not take part in the European Order of Merit ceremony. We reject such initiatives on principled grounds. Awards of this kind should remain a competence of the Member States, not become tools for promoting a European superstate.   Meanwhile, the European Parliament itself fails to respect democratic values, as the Patriots — despite being the third largest political group — are still excluded from several key decision-making processes within the EP.

Yesterday at the EP’s COP, on behalf of @PatriotsEP, I supported extending the mandate of the NGO Scrutiny Working Group in the CONT committee. ❗️Originally, we called for the establishment of a fully-fledged committee of inquiry to investigate the use of taxpayers’ money to fund NGOs that advocate for the Commission’s policies and even seek to influence MEPs. ❗️The Working Group was already a compromise. When we agreed to this in June 2025, I said: the best way to kill a strong committee of inquiry is to set up a working group with no clearly defined powers and simply call it a scrutiny working group. ❗️Nevertheless, it is essential that the mandate be prolonged because we still haven’t received sufficient answers from the Commission. This Working Group must become more active and more thorough, but above all, it must be allowed to continue its work. ❗️Scrutinizing the work of the Commission is not only our right — it is our duty.

Another false allegation has been debunked. Claims targeting @OliverVarhelyi in connection with spying allegations turned out to be completely unfounded. As the spokesperson of the @EU_Commission confirmed: “Based on the information gathered during this investigation and with the tools that we have at our disposal within the Commission, it is not possible to attribute individual responsibility or involvement beyond that of the intelligence officers themselves.” This case is yet another example of a series of politically motivated attacks whose claims repeatedly prove to be baseless and served primarily to shape the political narrative during the Hungarian election campaign. We hope this is now clear to everyone. 🔗 The European Conservative

After sixteen years, an era has come to an end in Hungary.  We can be proud of everything we achieved together under patriotic governance over the past decade and a half. Our policies always put the Hungarian people and the Hungarian nation first.  We built Europe’s most generous family support system, protected low utility costs, strengthened border protection, created hundreds of thousands of jobs, raised wages, reduced poverty, and renewed entire towns and villages across Hungary. Our political community always believed in building, not destroying. Hungary today is stronger, safer, prouder and more successful than it was in 2010. Sovereign, patriotic governance is not the past, it is the future, that became an example for many across Europe. The Hungarian people voted for change, and we fully respect their decision. We wish the incoming government success in serving Hungary’s national interests. For us, the next period will be about renewal, strengthening our community and rebuilding trust. We will continue working to protect everything we built together. We begin this new chapter with our heads held high. We have strong foundations and values worth defending.

❗️Today in Hungary, the new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, in his inaugural speech after being elected Prime Minister, demanded the resignation of all the heads of constitutional organs elected by the previous, democratically elected parliament simply because they “stand in the way” of the so-called “democratic renewal”. He set May 31 as a deadline.
In an angry outburst, he called on the President of Hungary to resign immediately – the same President who proposed him to be elected as Prime Minister.   How can it be reconciled with the “rule of law” that the Prime Minister of a new government — who was able to take over the leadership of the country according to the legal order, and thanks to the visible functioning of the very institutions he is now attacking — launches an open and total assault against the country’s constitutional institutions and their leaders?   The previous Hungarian patriotic government, which has been attacked for years with countless unfounded accusations of autocracy, never did anything like this.   ❗️A campaign of revenge has been launched against the Hungarian patriotic community that received 39% and 2.5 million votes.   ❗️Europe cannot remain silent on such relentless attacks on democratic institutions and constitutional order.
