The Happy Lab is hiring multiple PhD students for Fall 2025! RT appreciated :-) We discover how human factors can 1) mitigate ML-enabled abuse (deepfakes) and 2) be harnessed with ML-powered security to create safe, human-centric systems! Find us at: happyresearchlab.com :)

This was my 3rd year submitting to CHI (my PhD, like many others, is ruled by the annual CHI deadline and CHI itself!). Each year has gotten a bit less stressful because I'm noticing the positive impacts that slow, sustained efforts over time can have: (1/6)
Congratz to all #CHI2025 submitters! However, it makes me sad each year to see all the "finally I can sleep/have my weekends back!" posts. No conference should inspire researchers to do unhealthy work, especially when CHI already receives an unsustainable amount of submissions.

Some enjoy rushing for the deadline and are more productive under a time crunch, but I've realized this isn't for me. It's not sustainable in the long term for myself as responsibilities and projects increase, and it's good to have a personal life during deadline season! (5/6)

I find that working slowly but surely has helped me be more intentional about my work. When you have time, you can think about your contributions, methods, writing, and more importantly, why you're doing this work in the first place! Just my two cents :) (6/6)

🎉📢 I'm on the tenure track job market! 👋✨ I study how people building “AI” think about the downstream harms their work makes possible, and the epistemic and political economic systems which shape their thoughts, and our future.

Saw this new article @UpolEhsan shared and wanted to reshare a GoogleDoc I started last year on responding to common qualitative research critiques. You are welcome to contribute! Most people who have added examples so far have been HCI folks. docs.google.com/document/d/1…
🚨 Are we evaluating qualitative studies correctly in HCI? This paper "H is for Human and How (Not) To Evaluate Qualitative Research in HCI" argues we're using the wrong lens, potentially stifling valuable insights. Let's unpack why and how to fix it. 🧵[1/7]

I will present our work on user-centered conceptual designs for data minimization, insights from user interviews, and privacy experts' evaluation. ⏲️Thursday at User Studies III: Privacy I Track 3 at 10:45 am @USENIXSecurity @asia_biega @_LinKyi
📣New @USENIXSecurity paper from my research visit at Responsible Computing Group at #MPI-SP with amazing mentorship from @asia_biega and with @_LinKyi, Yang Wang. We explored how data minimization could be designed from a user-centered perspective, and in particular what factors influence user decision-making with regard to the necessity of data.
