Gorgeous albeit chilly day at Plainfield Country Club in Central Jersey. A stupendous Donald Ross design with a wide variety of holes and punishing green complexes.
The short par-3 11th, which plays to about 140 yards, is colloquially known as the “most challenging par-5 in all of New Jersey.”
The course has tremendous history too. Not only was the modern handicapping system developed at this club, but PCC hosted the 1978 U.S. Am won by John Cook, the 1987 U.S. Women’s Open won by Laura Davies, and it has held two PGA Tour events (The Barclays), won by Dustin Johnson in 2011 and Jason Day in 2015.
@USGA Four-Ball is here next month.
If you recall, young phenom Blades Brown and his partner Jackson Herrington lost on the final hole in this event at Philly Cricket Club last year. Hopefully we see more drama play out this year. Certainly this course will challenge the field. You hardly have a flat lie, the greens will reach 13 on the stimp, and the rough will grow to 5 inches or more.
