Just finished the Edge of Memories demo, by
@EOSeries @MidgarStudio , positively surprised.
I'll have to recover Edge of Eternity now 😂
Some thoughts/feedback (most of what I mention you can see in the clip below) :
🟢 I liked the premise/theme and characters.
🟢 I really liked how expressive they were during cutscenes, props to the animators and director.
🟢 I liked how the combat seemed to evolve in a good direction as I leveled up more.
🟢 I liked (more so wasn't expecting) the dark twist the story took, real quick 😂
🟢 Seems to have decent enemy variety, if I'm to base myself just on the demo alone.
🟢 Game ran really well, no performance issues on my end.
🟡 Speaking of their expressiveness, I liked it so much, that it was a real bummer to see them not have any mouth movements/lip syncing during standard dialogues, outside of cutscenes.
I can understand budget limitations, and they did retain some level of body movements, but I would like to see at least some basic mouth animations in dialogue.
It's not a major deal breaker to me, though.
🟡 Combat wasn't bad, but it lacked some impact feedback and could use some camera adjustments.
Not sure I was a fan of the target lock switching based on my camera direction.
Controller vibration wasn't working initially, but it turned on after I went through a few maps, which made combat "feel" better - that is not something that can be obtained on M&K though, so it could still use some improvements in that regard.
🟡 Dialogues could use an autoplay button and a history log option, in case you want to re-read something.
🔴 I encountered some major bugs in the settings menu and game graphics:
- Moving the brightness slider up would send the menu into a confirmation loop, forcing me to alt-f4 the game.
- The game automatically kept trying to apply a white-washed sort of palette, almost as if it was trying to kick of an HDR feature, which I have disabled in windows.
Whenever I managed to remove it, it would turn back after a cutscene or two.
- During exploration, the game felt "blurry", as if everything was being rendered at a lower resolution than my monitor, and after testing all the settings I couldn't find anything that would fix that. (I was always using DLAA/Native, tried every upscaler option)
And that would be all, hope you'll find the feedback useful, I wishlisted the game and I would recommend any action RPG/JRPG fan to check it out.
