🚨 Direct-to-consumer medical testing: an industry built on fear
This is a worrying trend and starting to impact #NHS too
Sadly a marker for Commercial Determinants of Health CDOH

#EvidenceKnowHow All tests give false positives. Giving the whole population full body scans would subject many to unnecessary extra testing and the psychological strain of being told they have a particular disease.
On such scales, screening can cause more harm than good.
ALT For a disease present in 2% of the population using a screening test with 95% accuracy. Of 1,000 people, 20 have the disease (of which 19 test positive) and 1 tests negative (false negative). Of 980 people without the disease, 49 test positive (false positive) and 931 test negative. The total number of 'positive' results is 68, but only 19 of these are correct, so the chance you have the disease if you have received a positive result is actually only 28%. A 28% chance is higher than the 2% chance you had before taking the test, but for most diseases this isn't enough to start treatment and further investigation would be needed.
Full-body scans to look for hidden disease are a bad idea – here’s why theconversation.com/full-bod…
"If I had the money to spend on one of these, I’d spend it on a holiday, which would be far better for my health."
Reality: no evidence of benefit, possible harm (iartrogenic injury etc), & cost to patient & system.

there are big questions about the cost effectiveness of general health checks, and they're not endorsed by the national screening committee set up for that purpose - see x.com/LRussellWolpe/status/1…
Don’t risk it.
Change will only happen if you vote for it a week today.
ALT A photo of Rishi Sunak standing in front of Downing Street with a newspaper cutting that says: 'Tories win fifth term. Rishi Suank will return to Downing Street with a majority after voters expecting an easy win for Labour stayed at home.' Then with text below that says: 'Change will only happen if you vote for it.'
Daily vitamins have no beneficial effect on mortality, & may be detrimental. Can the myth we all need supplementation please go away now? We've 50 years of data against it, yet Americans alone will spend $50 billion this year on expensive urine..

Just look at how the rate of increase in life expectancy has been dropping in this country. And it’s not just since COVID/2020. The decline seemed to start around 2010… weird, that.
Currently less than 1% of patients in NHS memory clinics had amyloid biomarker testing performed, and this will need ‘urgent’ service development if patients are to access newer treatments once approved. buff.ly/4cuFlwP

further, private remote GP services should NOT be 'instructing' NHS GPs to do referrals, tests, rx- with no idea of local arrangements/services/guidelines/protocols, and no often past medical history/ medications etc either.
there are upteen private clinics offering these drugs to people unseen and remotely. it is absolutely NOT ok to pass info to NHS GP with the expectation that we will safety net/ thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/a…
