Yet every morning he put on his duck hat.
And every morning the ducks politely pretended otherwise.

Because some things are nicer when everyone plays along.
Plop.
Off came the duck hat.
Pat-pat.
Onto its hook.
Puddleby climbed into bed.
The ducks settled beside the pond.

The moon shone above them all.
And somewhere in the dark came one last sound.
Quack.
Then another.
Quack-quack.
Puddleby smiled.
Closed his eyes.
And slept.
Until it was time to be a duck again.
