they eat cats, they eat dogs
In China, a famous dog was stolen and sold for meat for $27
The border collie named Choutou, whose life was followed by more than 1.5 million people on Chinese TikTok, was kidnapped while its owner was away.
As it later turned out, the dog was sold to a middleman for just $27. Choutou then ended up in a restaurant, where it was killed and prepared as food.
The owner had offered the thief around $1,400 to return the pet, but it was already too late.
The Independent reports that the story sparked outrage in China and reignited debate about animal protection. Despite some city-level bans, there is still no nationwide law protecting dogs and cats in the country.
The most disturbing part is that for the thief, Choutou was a $27 dog. For the owner, it was a friend he had traveled across the country with.
