Too many disingenuous cries for de-escalation from fancy ivory towers on our side make an impression that the intent for kinetic action is same on both sides. For us, the objective is maximum annihilation of terror enterprise across the border so that no more innocent lives succumb to Pak sponsored terror. It will buy us peace for a decade or so before the enemy regroups and develops another modus operandi to hit us. Whereas for their army, the intent is to stay dominant in the region they call a country by concerted manipulation of their people through misinformation and insidious propaganda. In this context, a call for de- escalation connotes backing down before our objectives are achieved.

This flurry of national anger being vented out over terror attacks on tourists is natural for a community that has lost so much because it shares boundary with a failed theocratic state. But while calling on our govt to go for a disproportionate revenge against perpetrators, both across the border and within our home, we must not forget that the modus operandi adopted by the terrorists wherein they kill people from hindu community is not novel and has always been the fundamental weapon of warfare for our neighbour. It feeds into its domestic propaganda and helps recruit more youth for the jihadi agenda, and for us the act is way more sophisticated than any propaganda could ever do to further the religious divide in our country. Kashmir has recently been returning to prosperity and we must ask ourselves who gains at its loss. There would be many black sheep in our country and our intelligence agencies will hunt them down and deal with them in the harshest ways. But this primitive rage triggered by our tribal instincts on witnessing the massacre of our kins should not block our cognitive ability to understand the geopolitical context and enemy’s way of operating. Unless we understand the raison d’être of those at the helm of affairs in our neighbouring country and the recent speech made by its army chief, we’d readily walk into the trap set by their propaganda ministry.
