Q: During filming, was there anything particularly memorable? A: For me, it was more about keeping that physical control over a long period of time, so it felt like a pretty unique experience. Also, I spoke Cantonese throughout the whole film—at first it felt a bit unfamiliar, but later I realized it actually helped me instead of holding me back. And after finishing the shoot, I think I came away with some new insights too.

Q: Recently, there’s a new film project called Empty Gun《空枪》It’s a realist-themed film—what kind of character do you play in it? A: I play a very ordinary Guangdong police officer, but he has a very unique inner core and carries his own trauma. He’s someone who keeps moving forward while bearing his wounds. It’s actually quite challenging and a breakthrough for me. We pre-shot the entire film in the early stage, which is a unique approach by the director. It really benefited me a lot. In the past, things like trending topics, popular genres, or well-known actors were very important. But now, audiences are exposed to more and more content, and they have much less patience for shows that aren’t engaging—or that feel superficial or formulaic. As creators, we need to be more patient, taking the time to carefully refine scripts—starting from the core and then building the story outward. For actors, it’s also important to stay grounded and truly focus on delivering a good performance, bringing each role to life with sincerity. When I choose scripts, I don’t see popularity as an absolute standard anymore, it can only serve as a reference. In the end, what really matters is the core of the story and the characters themselves, not piling on plot points or simply chasing hype and traffic. Q: Recently, with phenomena like AI face-swapping and AI voice cloning impacting the entire film and television industry—including infringing on actors’ personal rights—what are your thoughts on this? A: I think AI itself is a tool. Every industry needs the right tools, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The key lies in how we use it. It can definitely assist with things like post-production, improving efficiency, and reducing costs. But when it comes to acting, I don’t think it should become a substitute. AI can imitate an actor’s face and voice very closely, but when it comes to performing a scene—the mindset, the soul, the creative intention behind it—those things can’t be replicated. Even the imperfections in an actor’s performance—because of repeated takes, there’s always that one unique moment where everything aligns just right. That kind of timing and spontaneity can’t be recreated. It’s something given by chance. And those instincts—maybe in that moment, my performance wasn’t perfectly polished, maybe it had rough edges—but that’s exactly what can make it more vivid and alive. For a perfectly structured AI program, it’s very difficult to reproduce that kind of authenticity. His answer is intelligent, composed, and full of depth. His EQ is on another level, and it shows in how thoughtfully he responds to complex issues #TanJianci
