Digital natives don’t think the same way as the generations that are making policy decisions.
Things will change wildly when the digital natives get control of policy, and I am here for it!
And for the people who keep saying that privacy will drive people towards self-hosted solutions:
I’m 24. People my age have grown up with tech, and are generally more capable at using it than older generations.
The amount of non-tech friends that I’ve seen upload pictures of themselves to the most shady-looking apps, just to get fun AI pictures of themselves, is ridiculous.
They don’t care. I sometimes ask why. A common answer is “So? What are they gonna do with my pictures? The app is fun!”
I’ll often then offer to do it for them, running the model directly myself. That way, they can avoid the privacy issues.
Not one has taken me up on it. “But I don’t want to wait.”
Convenience and utility are king.
