The @uaw2865 strike is over but @UCPrezDrake wants to impose the costs of paying workers a living wage on the already strained budgets of campuses and departments. Say no to puntive austerity, sign this letter cucfa.org/2023/02/reject-pun… @uc_faculty @UCAFT @AFSCMELocal3299 @CalYDSA

BART Board just approved my proposal to institute 30 min grace period for $6.40 excursion fare! We'll soon stop penalizing riders who enter a station and don't ride BART, especially when it's due to BART delays. Thanks @JaniceForBART & staff for working with me all year on this!

This is awesome. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while.

I'm excited to fool around with new ways to write code using blocks! snap.berkeley.edu/versions/d…

ALT as a program is assembled from blocks the text code equivalent is changed in synch.

This makes me sad - but @UCBerkeley and @Berkeley_EECS need to take notice! We cannot be driving away smart and capable and empathetic instructors from our classes.

Officially handed in my notice to quit my lecturer position at UC Berkeley after the fall semester finishes. It’s been an amazing 2 years, but I’m exhausted, and given that I actually have a main full time job as an ML engineer for an amazing startup already, I just have no time.

I needed to look at the terms of the Amex Purchase Protection / Extended Warranty agreement.... it excludes insurrections. Though the last updated date was 1/1/2020 ...can they predict the future or the actuaries just really ahead of the times?

Okay, this is an absolutely horrible idea.
Universities are partnering with sports betting companies to introduce students and fans to online gambling — and reaping millions of dollars in fees. nyti.ms/3TT0bvV

Quite possibly the most organized the Stanford Band has been! This was cool!

What a beautiful showing of solidarity from @lsjumb during halftime at the Big Game! Students across California know that fair working conditions make better learning conditions. We will not be divided! #UAWonStrike

This! There was lots of pre-complaining but I found it pretty good for BART especially. Will be extremely useful for Mission Bay to East Bay commuting!

The public art is 💯. And the walk between the Union Square station to the Powell Bart and Muni connections was a lot shorter than I expected.

If I ran the CS major (and I never will) students would be required to balance tech courses with humanities 50/50. And only 4 courses per semester. Theyd know less math/physics/cs and thatd be fine.

OK, so I have a few hundred followers across Mastodon instances, what's the best way to converge them? Pick and instance and then migrate over? This is why I hate this so much.

I fully support the right of UC academic workers to organize. They are the backbone of our world-class public university system. I hope that both parties can reach a fairly negotiated agreement. washingtonpost.com/business/…

honestly, one of the highlights of today (esp on this TL) is watching all the strikes going on, particularly from our 48,000 colleagues (!) at the University of California. solidarity. x.com/uaw2865/status/1588009…

BREAKING - 36,558 total votes were cast in UC Academic Workers’ Strike Authorization Votes, with 98% voting Yes to authorize a multi-unit strike if necessary. These are far and away the largest and most decisive strike authorization votes ever taken by Academic Workers in the US.

This has to be one of my favorite IT stories of all time. And it is deeply relatable to anyone who has ever worked anywhere that scaled really fast and documented poorly.
12 years ago, Twitter’s office used a Mac Mini to tunnel into the servers. One day, an IT guy found it in the closet. “Anyone know who owns this?” “Unplug it. Someone will show up.” Everyone lost access to servers. Huge crisis. It became known as the “Load Bearing Mac Mini.”

This 'makes sense'....but is too much. I'd make a joke about needing a PhD but clearly that's not enough.

Feel like I did way better this time with our @SplitTicket_ senate ratings; if Kelly and CCM hang on (still not confirmed), we'd go 34/35, missing only PA. regardless of what happens, still a lot better than my disastrous 2020 predictions! 2 more years under your belt does help.
