There are 12X as Many Latino Students as Latino Teachers in PA
That's right - while 12% of students in PA are Latino, only 1% of the teacher workforce serve as 'mirrors and windows' to reflect their background, serve as role models, and share lived experience as Latinos (

Though this recent statistic (2021 data) is striking, Latinos are consistently the most underrepresented group in the educator workforce - nationally, 28% of students are Latino vs. just 9% of teachers (

Why does this matter, you ask? There is a mountain of evidence of the positive effects, and academic and life outcomes, when Latino students have teachers who understand and reflect their background (there are 131 references in this recent article alone:

We're grateful to the Pennsylvania Latino Convention for the invitation to join a powerful panel at next month's convention in Harrisburg, to discuss approaches that we and others have demonstrated are effective in helping build a more welcoming, robust, and sustainable teacher talent pipeline, for the untapped potential in communities across the U.S.
Shout out to the Pennsylvania Educator Diversity Consortium for your great work, and to the PA Latino Convention for your leadership.
