Lots of people cross about this (re “self-reference”), but Jay Bernstein provides a good explanation of what Rose means—and why Adorno would agree.
Missing from Adorno's work is the Hegelian notion of 'self-reference'; missing from the Marxism of both men (Adorno and Benjamin) is any notion of human activity or praxis.

Continuing to enjoy the work of Claire Bishop. This morning I read her essay on dialectical contemporaneity in curatorial practice. She ties it to Benjamin’s practice of collecting which generates “multitemporal mappings of history outside of national and disciplinary frameworks”
