Friday Wind Systems Insight | REIPPPP and the Future of Wind Energy in South Africa Since 2011, REIPPPP has transformed South Africa’s electricity sector: 12,831 MW procured 136 projects awarded 40 wind projects R239 billion in private investment 88,000 job years created 70% reduction in wind and solar tariffs Wind has been one of REIPPPP’s greatest success stories, with more than 4 GW procured. But recent bid windows exposed a key constraint: grid capacity. No wind projects were awarded in BW6 and BW7 due to transmission limitations. Policy unlocks investment. Infrastructure enables delivery. What reforms are most critical to unlock South Africa’s next phase of wind energy growth? #SAWEA #LeadingWithWind #WindEnergyAdvocacy #WindWorks

Friday Wind Systems Insight | Understanding South Africa’s Generation Portfolio As of Oct 2024, South Africa had 53.9 GW of installed capacity: Coal: 72% Wind: 6.4% But installed capacity is not the same as energy delivered. South Africa’s wind fleet has generated: - Generated more than 74,256 GWh of clean electricity - Produced enough energy to power approximately 22 million households - Delivered 62% of all renewable energy supplied to the grid in 2024 Wind offers: - Zero fuel costs - Minimal water use - No combustion emissions - Strong alignment with evening peak demand - Complementarity with solar PV Coal remains central to the current system, but wind is already demonstrating its strategic value. How should South Africa balance reliability, affordability and sustainability in its evolving energy mix? #SAWEA #LeadingWithWind #WindEnergyAdvocacy #WindWorks
