some of my thoughts on ‘your skyblue’
as always, i enjoyed the writing. i was irked that the entire kindled was basically revealed in the pv, but other than that i loved it. i’ll be quoting
@lucidmyths a bit here because she and i spoke at length about it …
i feel like it’s a slight expansion on crease (his world underneath anecdote) specifically using the concepts of antipodes and sunsets.
from crease, we were able to better understand who caleb truly is, with the symbolism of the folded paper, and thus creases in that paper. the point was that, at his core, caleb IS the DAA heartthrob but he’s ALSO the colonel. he may have been “forced” into that role and the awful things he’s had to do in that role, but that’s who he is. it’s not a mask he puts on and off, it’s more of a different way he can fold himself in to be what he perceives mc needs.
and i think mc understands that and she welcomes it. however (like maria said) it seems like there are times where mc worries caleb is not happy—that he cannot be himself (spotlit gaze hello). the whole date she set up, with the T-93, the conversation with the little boy who loved planes, and the questions she asked him about his most memorable flight experience…it very much seems like mc was trying to remind him WHY he became a pilot. where he came from, even his initial dreams vs where he ended up now look SO drastically different
‘your skyblue’ read like an old days card, but it obviously wasn’t. like maria said, it honestly feels so nostalgic to the point that it evokes a feeling of saying farewell to DAA caleb, closing the chapter on a time in caleb’s life mc wants to recreate because she believes that that’s what he longs for. this is also symbolized by the fact that their flight will be that T-93’s last
but again, the point is that caleb is DAA caleb to his core, just as he is the colonel. it’s not a mask he slips on and off, it’s who he is. so what do i mean by saying farewell?
that’s a bit where the whole concept of sunsets and antipodes comes in.
