CM Yogi inaugurated Project GANGA today and one of the things worth sitting with is what the name actually means in context. The Ganga did not become the lifeline of northern India because it served the big cities on its banks. It became the lifeline because it reached everywhere. The fields three villages away from the river still benefited from it. The farmer who never saw the river directly still ate because of what it made possible upstream. That is the standard this project has set for itself. Not internet in the district headquarters. Not broadband in the block office. Twenty lakh homes across rural Uttar Pradesh, in the villages that have historically been the last to get anything, connected with speeds of up to a thousand megabits per second. Whether it meets that standard is what the next two to three years will answer. But naming a digital project after the Ganga is not a small commitment. It is a public statement about who this is for.
