📢New IMS paper. We move the conversation beyond where the money to help public interest media is, to a more complex one: how can local capital be unlocked to support public interest media? mediasupport.org/viability/

Urgent Update At 3 PM today, FIA officials raided the Raftar office. Without explanation, they seized Mr. Mallick’s work computer and confiscated every USB drive in the office. This is not a routine investigation — it is a direct assault on independent journalism. Farhan Mallick has already been taken, and now they are dismantling the tools and archives that power his work. We are watching a systematic effort to silence a voice that has only ever stood for truth. And we will not stay quiet. #Journalismisnotacrime #ReleaseFarhanMallick #raftarbarhneydo

Yesterday evening, FIA officials visited the Raftar office without prior notice. They harassed our team, provided no explanation for their visit, and VERBALLY summoned Mr. Mallick to their office for a hearing today at 1 PM. In compliance, Mr. Mallick appeared at the designated office at the required time. However, after making him wait for hours without cause, the authorities arrested him at 6 PM. We are deeply concerned by this blatant intimidation of independent journalism. Raftar stands for truth, accountability, and the right to report freely without fear. The lack of transparency in this situation raises serious questions about press freedom and the targeting of independent voices. We demand immediate clarity on Mr. Mallick’s arrest and call for the protection of journalists and media professionals from unjust harassment. #raftardotcom #freejournalism

Heard the IT minister reportedly say the Twitter/X ban does not affect FoE because less than 2% Pakistanis use the platform. The actual estimated share is closer to 6%. But the numbers argument is fundamentally misleading. (1/n)

Political and civic expression on Twitter/X used to enter the mainstream news cycle much more quickly compared to other platforms. Perhaps still does. Probably only WhatsApp/YouTube compare to it in driving sociopolitical conversations in Pakistan. (4/n)

If X was not so significant, why else would government officials including ministers, continue to use it for their global public diplomacy despite the domestic ban on the platform since February. (n/n)

HRCP is deeply concerned by the situation facing journalists in the country, with at least three journalists reportedly target-killed this year alone. Awami Awaz journalist Nasrullah Gadani, who died of his injuries earlier today, was fired on by unknown gunmen in Ghotki on 21 May. The Sindh government must investigate his murder and hold the perpetrators to account by taking all necessary measures to implement the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act.
