ORCAS! The highlight for guests (and guides!) on our @shetlandwild tour last week. We watched this pod in Quendale Bay and on reviewing images and footage, the Scottish KW Photo ID team (Karen Munro, Saana Isojunno, Karen Hall and myself) matched them to encounters off Oban and Ardnamuchan in western Scotland a week earlier! @Seasaver @NLFerries @saana_is @kasmunro @kazcustard @Shetnews

We’re on the Isle of Skye and it’s wonderful to say - “I live here”. It was a nine hour journey from Cumbria because of an unexpected road closure. Nevertheless, the stunning scenery eased any frustration. The weather was kind and everything went smoothly. I’m indebted to my phenomenally strong nephew and an equally powerful family friend who helped. It would have been a different story without them. All we have to do now is repeat the drive south to return the hire vehicle and we can say as we drive north again - “We’re going home!”

Major excitement . A Pine Marten below our feeders last night around 7pm . Bearing in mind we live in the centre of Inverness. Chuffed to bits #Nature

Washing the dishes last night when an owl flew in through an open window. It dried all of the dishes, put them away then flew right back out! Must have been a Teat owl 🙈😂🦉

Last nights photo scene at the haunted house. We put a couple of lights in the abandoned house in the desert, then the guide stood in one window to be the ‘ghost.’ You will have to zoom in to see the ghost.

A quick catch up before being off grid until Weds. Visited Fish River Canyon area before Lüderitz. The heavy rains in April have resulted in abundant flowers in the rocky desert areas. Saw wild horses near Aus and travelled on roads that gave a vibration massage on the way! 😱

Today we’ve been shooting at Kolmanskop, an abandoned diamond mining town that s slowly being engulfed by the desert dunes. The TV series & video game called Fallout (an apocalyptic tale) was filmed here. 😎

From Oban to Shetland - an exciting ORCA photo ID match! Monday morning 8 June 2026 could not have started better for @ShetlandWild guide David Fairhurst and our ‘Ultimate Shetland’ group. Just after breakfast we received news from our friends and ardent WDC Shorewatch volunteers Carole Davis and Bernard Siddle that they’d found a pod of ORCAS less than a mile away from us in Quendale Bay. We were there within minutes and soon enjoying the incredible sight of six individuals – including a tiny calf - milling around in flat calm seas for around 30 minutes. I headed to the west side of the cliffs where the pod was closer and photographed and filmed them before they started heading south towards Scatness, and we sporadically had ‘eyes on’ for another 45 minutes. We lost sight of them from Sumburgh Head and as a pod I'd never seen in Shetland waters before, I was keen to try and find a ‘match’. The Scottish Killer Whale Group (SKWG) is responsible for the Scottish Killer Whale Photo Identification Catalogue and maintains a large repository of imagery of animals photographed in Scottish waters since 2009. Its members are myself @HughHarrop @kasmunro @saana_is and @kazcustard. As is typical in these situations, the process of photo ID work began right away and imagery was shared and discussed. It was Karen Munro, who, on seeing one of the images of the bull excitedly suggested we looked at images by Jimmy Hall from an encounter as recently as 31 May off Oban and 1 June off Ardnamuchan – yes - 'THAT' pod which featured widely in the media hunting a Common Dolphin a week ago... Bingo! The bull’s right eye patch, left saddle and dorsal structure was an unequivocal match and we made three further positive matches and two ‘shared feature’ matches thanks to the images taken by Jimmy, allowing us to confidently say that the Shetland animals were indeed those from the Oban and Ardnamuchan encounters just seven days earlier! This is the second significant ‘match’ we’ve made so far this season. In April 2026, we matched at least five individuals off Sumburgh Head to previous documented sightings of a pod recorded twice of the Outer Hebrides and once off Børøyfjorden in southern Norway - the first ever Scottish / Norwegian match. Another shining example of the power of citizen science and the collaborative roles we undertake to try and help increase everyone’s knowledge of these incredible creatures.

We shot sunset, took a break to eat, then the Milky Way late into the night, a few hrs rest & then back out for first light just after 6am today. As the sun rises, the dassies come out to warm up; these 4 babies watched me taking photos. I also saw an elephant shrew & woodpecker
