1/The collapse of the Government in Afghanistan this past week was so swift and complete - it was disorienting and difficult to comprehend. This is how the events seemed to proceed from my perspective as Central Bank Governor.

Well done @unicefchief! Direct payment of salaries to Afghan teachers & other public servants is the only way to avert sure collapse of health, education, water-supply, electricitry etc in Afghanistan. @WorldBank and UN must cover all sectors like this. reut.rs/3q134iW

“Taliban bans foreign currencies” This isn’t as large an issue as it first seems. Taliban are doing this because: - There is limited foreign currency in the country - They want to promote the use of local currency Tough to enforce, in any regard bbc.com/news/business-591294…

“The Taliban are allowing education…The press is relatively free”?! What kind of journalism is this where someone wildly misrepresents reality and you don’t challenge him? Btw happy day 45 of the vast majority of girls being forced out of secondary school.

Thank you @ghoshworld. Well said “When dealing with Taliban, we should insist that there be women present” Previous government was criticized when it had no women at meetings - even with women judges, diplomats, & ministers Now aid agencies just cow-tail to Taliban protocol
My latest: When negotiating with the Taliban, we should insist that there be women present… on both sides of the table. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

I was responsible for TAPI in Afghanistan since 2015 The project won’t move forward for many reasons, one of which is that the TAPI “I” no longer has interest
FWIW, the Taliban has endorsed TAPI since 2016, even as it blew up all kinds of other infrastructure. Due to ongoing financing constraints, it’s unlikely TAPI will be completed anytime soon even if security improves. Mujahid’s statement sounds good but ultimately means little.

I often get asked whether China could replace the financial power of the US/EU/WB/IMF in Afghanistan I think this pledge clearly answers that question: $1M $5M

In Afghanistan, the @UN is staying and delivering, and will continue to promote and defend the rights of women and girls. We will not stop until girls can go back to school, and women can return to their jobs and participate in public life.
