OpenAI’s is targeting for an autonomous AI research assistant in September! OpenAI had been internally planning for September 2026 as I have mentioned, & On October 28th during a livestream, Sam Altman and Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki made it public. September 2026 is the target for an “intern-level AI research assistant” a system capable of autonomously delivering on real research projects. They followed that with a March 2028 target for a fully automated AI researcher, and Pachocki noted that deep learning systems could be less than a decade from superintelligence. GPT-5 shipped August 7th, 2025, GPT-5.1 followed in November & GPT-5.2 dropped December 11th. That’s three frontier upgrades in four months, and each one extends the autonomous task horizon (see METR) further. Employees are already reporting that current models can run variations of experiments overnight from a single high-level prompt - researchers waking up to completed sweep dashboards and samples, having never touched the terminal themselves. It is within my belief that September would be right on target for a major model upgrade (GPT 6) and a model that is able to do days of coherent work that would yield valuable as an assistant AI researcher.
