The idea of peacekeeping usually involves rhetoric surrounding toughness and law & order. Harsher consequences for offenders. The idea of peacemaking is about changing the conditions that produce violence and harm. Deeply intentional relationships with those who are struggling.

Last week, 2 Denver youths died due to gun violence and the loudest voices are calling for harsher punishments for youth offenders. The loudest voices are always the voice of "peacekeepers" while the ones Jesus described as blessed are the "peacemakers."

Humans are in pain. Humans in pain need to connect with humans trained in caring for trauma. Healing begins & ends in compassionate relationship. Police officers with guns on their hips are not trained in compassionate relationships. They’re trained to eliminate “threats”

Everyday for the past month my 14 yr old blasts Pearl Jam, Nirvana, & Green Day along with his usual emo punk from the basement. Excessive volume levels. My 12 yr old is infatuated with hip-hop and I’ll do everything in my power to indoctrinate him with Tribe, De La, Pharcyde.
