This is *less* than what it cost to produce the 2019 environmental impact statement for the oil/gas leasing program in the refuge. But @lisamurkowski promised billions in revenue, which is how she managed to get the provision opening the coastal plain into a budget bill.

I put in a FOIA request for all correspondence between @USFWS and @DHSgov regarding the destruction of a 1,000-year-old arch site in Cabeza Prieta Nat’l Wildlife Refuge. Will probably take half a decade before they release any records.

BREAKING: DHS just waived all environmental laws to blast border barriers and roads through Big Bend National Park. This marks the first time in American history the feds have gutted dozens of laws to push industrial-level construction through a national park.

New: Trump admin is now waiving federal environmental laws for border barrier projects through Big Bend National Park - and Big Bend Ranch State Park: public-inspection.federalreg… Weirdly - DHS says it actually meant to do this last month. I'll explain in a quick thread 👇

In its press release on the refuge lease sale, AIDEA includes two photos of caribou near oil/gas infrastructure, suggesting that there are few if any impacts on the ungulates. Recent research, however, shows that roads, pipelines, & wells all negatively affect caribou migration.

Interestingly the @USGS PhD scientists who did research on caribou and oil/gas infrastructure are now both former employees

Courtesy of David Bernhardt, DOI was required to put an estimated cost on every enviro impact statement. The 2019 EIS for the oil/gas leasing program in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge cost more than what was generated in last week's auction. Total bust. And waste of money.

Add to that the cost of the supplemental EIS undertaken during Biden and the revised record of decision released under Trump 2.0, and you have a colossal waste of taxpayer money that has amounted to very little. And most of the $ spent on leases has been by the state of Alaska.

Taxpayers for Common Sense. @taxpayers Would be nice to get a rejoinder from @lisamurkowski, who has championed oil/gas leasing in the refuge as a win win for taxpayers.

Murkowski's big lie was promising that oil/gas leasing in the refuge would generate billions in revenue for the treasury. This is how she snuck the provision in the 2017 reconciliation bill. Three lease sales later, her staff's estimate has been proven demonstrably false.

The Alaska delegation, which has pushed for drilling in the Arctic Nat'l Wildlife Refuge for decades, has not issued a press release about the lease sale.

Hex, which no one has heard of, is mostly a small scale natural gas producer and AIDEA is a state corporation that does not do oil and gas development. That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this lease sale.
🚨 Oil industry is hesitant to drill in ANWR, with only two companies bidding on 5 tracts out of 58 offered in the sale. Takeaways: - Auction generated $6M - Winning bids totaled $3M - Hex Energy & the Alaska Industrial Development & Export Authority were the bidders

People have taken this tweet to assume that the entire coastal plain has been leased! In fact the auction was a bust--with only five leases acquired and a measly $3.7M in revenue. The refuge remains a landscape that can be protected.
The Trump administration will auction off 689,000 acres of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil and gas drilling today.
