Most of the rain falling on California cities now isn't being captured, despite the ongoing drought. Better urban design can help store more water and alleviate at least some of the flooding. fastcompany.com/90832580/how…

After all of the rain, waterfalls around the Bay Area are huge. Saw these just before the roads nearby closed to flooding. Turn on your sound for the bathtub effect. #AtmosphericRiver

The storm surge from #Ian is terrifying. I talked to @EDF climate scientist @Tianyi_Sun_ about how climate change is making hurricanes worse. First, heat in the ocean is fueling stronger winds. "Wind is physically pushing water inland," Sun says. /thread x.com/i/status/1575180210219…

Even if emissions drop, global warming will still fuel more storms like #Ian. But “there’s a difference in every fraction of a degree,” says Sun. “It’s incredibly important to rapidly cut greenhouse gas emissions.”

Sea levels are also rising. The sea level near St. Petersburg, FL is nearly 9 inches higher than it was when record-keeping started in 1947. “The higher your sea level is, the more likely the maximum height of the storm surge will be higher,” says Sun. x.com/i/status/1575196052315…

Next, climate change is making rainfall heavier in storms like #Ian. “Because we have a warmer atmosphere, there’s more moisture in the atmosphere, and when it rains, it rains more,” Sun says. x.com/i/status/1575147640991…

We went to @PGMuseum's butterfly sanctuary, where there are now 13,000 monarchs. Last year at this site: zero. Monarchs are still in danger, but this is good news.

More than 2 million acres have burned in CA so far, an area 138x the size of Manhattan. That's more than any other year on record, and we haven't reached peak fire season. My apartment is bathed in an eerie red light. This is what it's like to live with climate change.

I took these pictures in Yosemite this weekend - this is the middle of the day, no filter. It was so eerie and felt like a glimpse of our future.
