15 yaşındaki evladı Irmak'ın elini bırak(a)mayan Mesut Hançer'i,
İSİAS Oteldeki masum çocukları, aileleri ve öğretmenlerini,
11 ilde yitip giden on binlerce canı,
yetim, öksüz, eşsiz, işsiz, evsiz-barksız, yurtsuz kalan yüzbinleri...
...tüm bunlara sebep olanları,
sebep olanlar için adalet getirmeyenleri,
depreme "asrın felaketi" diyip ondan ders çıkarmayanları,
olası Marmara depremine hazırlanmayanları,
unutma, unutturma!

🤖 From glossy .ai domain names to grand promises of “personalized learning,” AI-powered language platforms are everywhere. But what’s really behind the hype? My new paper takes a critical look at 48 platforms that brand themselves as AI-driven.
Thru CDA and platformization, I show how these platforms commodify education and reshape ELT into the “platformized ELT ecosystem.” It contributes to the growing scholarship on AI discourses, showing how AI in education isn’t just a tool, but also a powerful commercial strategy.
I’m truly grateful to special issue editors Nathaniel Ming Curran and Christopher Jenks for affording me the space to share this work! 🙏

Why did #Turkey (or Türkiye) get the works? That’s nobody’s business but President #Erdoğan’s! 🇹🇷
My new article dives into the story behind the country’s recent rebranding — from 🦃 bird jokes to bad puns, from political spin to the fight for a new global image.
What an absolute honor to deliver one of the plenary speeches at the 6th EMI Symposium/3rd Annual ELINET Conference 2025, held at the beautiful Wolfson College, Oxford.
To be in the presence of so many brilliant minds and to speak to such a thoughtful and engaged community was both humbling and energizing. I am still reflecting on the depth of thought, dialogue and connection that filled the room and beyond.
Heartfelt thanks to Heath Rose, Mona Nishizaki, Nicola Galloway, and Jim McKinley for curating such a rich, diverse and critically engaged intellectual space. I am deeply grateful to share this space with such an inspiring community!
What does it mean when teachers also become brands? How do language ideologies get packaged multimodally and circulated in a 30-second Reel? What are the implications at the nexus of ELT professionals and linguistic hierarchies?
In this new publication in Applied Linguistics, I connect the dots between influencer culture, self-branding, and language ideologies and raising important questions about the future of language education in the platformized ELT ecosystem.
🎉Big personal news: I have officially received tenure and have been promoted to Associate Professor at @UofAlabama ! Apparently, they liked my research, my teaching, and the way I alphabetized my references enough to keep me around permanently. #RollTide! 🐘
To @bengucs and Defne, my constant anchors and greatest joys…Thank you for your infinite patience, love, and all the time I selfishly stole for deadlines, drafts, and chaos. Thank you for riding this academic rollercoaster with me. This milestone is as much yours as it is mine.
Here’s to resisting the pull of the Academic Olympics, and instead, to being kind, curious, and humble scholars: asking big questions, sparking ideas, building community, and yes, launching more caffeinated projects… #Peace!
