Forty days ago, I began a low-carb no-sugar diet as an experiment. My blood sugar used to hover around 10 mmol/l – now 7 mmol/l (HbA1c 60 to 45). Nobody gave me guidance so I found it myself. Thank you @lowcarbGP. Started a diet, gained a lifestyle. More: phcuk.org

Brilliant talk by Dr Unwin @lowcarbGP and Dr Chaffee @anthony_chaffee advocating a low-carb lifestyle. Benefits for everyone, not just diabetics: improves kidney function, liver function, lipid profiles, blood pressure, etc. HEALTHSPAN, not just lifespan. youtu.be/YvK2NrO1wxE

The most ridiculous feedback I've ever received, in this case for a test translation: "Passable but not very accurate, but what the translator has put is in many cases what one would expect a document like this to actually say." Plus comments arguing for word-for-word renditions.

I don't need a robotic arm to fill up my car. I don't want to read content written by a machine. I hate chatting to customer service bots. I avoid self-checkouts. What is wrong with the world? What is wrong with human? The only new tech I want is a time machine. Grump grump grump

Word of Christmas Day, as always, is ‘confelicity’: joy in the happiness of others. The fellow emotion to ‘compassion’, literally ‘a suffering with’. Wishing you confelicity aplenty this Christmas.

I don't understand people who just write 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy birthday' in a card and nothing else. Seriously, why even bother at that point? What a wasted opportunity to write something personal, meaningful, sweet or funny. It doesn't even have to be long. Make it count!

Do I know any English to Flemish translators? If not, I’m sure I know someone who does.

Public service announcement: XTM Workbench is the worst translation platform I've ever had to use. If possible, avoid. #x8

As I work on a machine-translation post-editing project offered by a lovely client and accepted out of desperation, the expression that keeps coming to mind is: You can't polish a turd. . . #xl8

Dear fellow translators in the UK, an agency is insisting that I provide my UTR (or NI) number for invoicing/onboarding purposes and that they wouldn't be able to pay me if I don't. I don't see why they would need such sensitive personal information. Should I walk away? #xl8

Translating Europe Forum 2023: - Is post-editing contaminating us? - Skills need nurturing - No market for mediocrity - Specialisation, support & style - Centaurs vs cyborgs - Is 'fit for purpose' acceptable? - Should we ALWAYS strive for excellence? And much more... #2023TEF

What is quality, what is excellence? This depends on the client's expectations. One could say quality = meeting expectations and excellence is exceeding them, says the panel on skills at #2023TEF @CristianBrsvn @uvigo @DCresceri @RLFT_GmbH
