I want only one thing for 2026: That the light will win.

Russia bombed the Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv overnight, destroying Ukraine's largest costume archive, roughly 100,000 costumes and 3 million clothing items, built up over decades of Ukrainian filmmaking history. Gone. This wasn't incidental. It's part of a pattern of strikes on Ukrainian cultural sites, alongside this week's hit on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, that target memory and identity, not just infrastructure. I hope the international film community responds loudly. And I'd add this: after four years of full-scale war, some Western festivals are quietly making room again for Russian films and "Russian perspectives." Whatever the intent, gestures toward neutrality in this context don't read as balance, they read as normalization.

Today connects several historic events together to an awful explanation why history matters and if not stopped, the aggressors strike again: - June 14, 1940 - Soviet military aircraft shot down Finnish passenger plane Kaleva on its daily flight from Tallinn to Helsinki. All aboard were killed, including U.S. and French diplomatic couriers; - June 14, 1941 - occupying Soviets deported ca 10,000 Estonians overnight in filthy cattle carts to Soviet Gulags. Their guilt - being members of the families of Estonian political, economic, cultural, law enforcement and military elite; - June 14, 2026 - hearing news of russian drone attack against Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the holiest sites of the Eastern Slavic religion that putin and his cronies claim to defend and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lavra was established around 1050 AD, moscow was first mentioned in chronicles a good century later. - June 14, 2026 - the still-ongoing russian missile and drone attack has also hit the Kharkiv Art Museum and the Iconic Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv. Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian strikes are ongoing in Kyiv, as well as in Kharkiv. Last night, the Russians launched more than 60 missiles at the capital alone. In total, 70 missiles and 611 drones were used against Ukraine. As of now, 28 people have been reported injured and four killed in the capital. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. A Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra set the Dormition Cathedral on fire – a church whose history dates back to the 11th century. And this is one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date. The State Emergency Service has already extinguished the fire on the cathedral’s roof. In Kharkiv, the Russians carried out a repeat strike against our rescuers as they were putting out a fire at the site of an earlier strike on an industrial facility. So far, tragically, five people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Nine people have been injured. In Dnipro, Russia struck the grounds of a railway station, a college, and several enterprises. Other cities and communities were targeted as well. The Kyiv, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions were also under attack. This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war. It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries, which are now gathering for their summit – and that this response be decisive and substantive: more pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukraine’s air defense, especially anti-ballistic capabilities. I thank everyone who is helping us protect lives.

Four firefighters killed in Kharkiv yesterday by Russian double tap. They served in the 6th State Fire and Rescue Unit of Kharkiv: ​Dmytro Boiko, Squad Leader, Chief Master Sergeant of the Civil Protection Service; ​Danylo Tishchenko, Firefighter-Rescuer, Sergeant of the Civil Protection Service; ​Serhiy Makovetskyi, Firefighter-Rescuer, Sergeant of the Civil Protection Service; ​Vadym Zinchenko, Driver, Master Sergeant of the Civil Protection Service. A Civil Protection Specialist at the Kharkiv Regional State Administration died with them. Name was not announced yet.
