As a comic writer who hires artists for my projects, I've had the privilege of looking over comic artist portfolios in person and online. I thought it might be helpful to share some of what I look for as I go through portfolios in order to help those of you who are newer.

If you're a comic creator on here, don't just show up when you're asking for money. Be a part of the community.

Anyone know of any comic anthologies with open submissions? I'd love to try to pitch to anthologies this summer.

I haven't picked up many comics lately, but these are my newest pickups. ❤️

I don't know about you, but... ...it seems like a trillionaire hoarding that much wealth would/will be horrible for the economy as it restricts everyone else's ability to maintain a living and pushes more into poverty... ...but what do I know? I'm just a guy.

I've missed creating things from scratch. Making up history, mythology and bringing them to bear upon characters. Super excited with how Vol 1 of Deicidium is shaping up. Cannot wait to share <3

It's really easy some days to get angry over things you cannot control. Sometimes it's feeling like there's no space for you or feeling like you have no agency. I won't pretend to have an answer for you, but I'm going to create my own space and embrace my unique path.

Last weekend, I organized most of my comic collection from 2011 to present. It gave me such a warm feeling of nostalgia, I nearly cried a couple of times. If you can, go flip through your collection. Find your earliest books. You'll be glad you did.

Last night, I was feeling immense Imposter Syndrome towards one of the scripts I'm working on that feels out of my league. I will remind you what I had to remind myself then... The name of the game is finishing what you start. Keep going. That's the entire business.

Do you know how many comics are made by filmmakers, actors, and novelists who've never written a comic before? If they can do it, so can you. I promise.

That Nintendo Direct was A LOT of fantasy and dark fantasy. Not my cup of tea, but happy for everyone getting lots of great games.

Here's something to think about. Usually when a new tool comes along, younger artists champion it, while older artists bemoan things changing. This time, it's the opposite – the old guard is into AI while the young largely abhor it. Worth thinking why that might be the case.
I think most Gen-X artists feel this way. A lot of them are afraid to say it publicly for fear of their young fans destroying them.

I respect the hell out of Todd, but this is absolute bullshit. It's not a tool to make our jobs easier or better. It's a product designed and sold to replace human artists and take away our agency. It's an existential threat to our ability to make a living doing what we love.

And not just a threat to what we love, but WHY we love making art as well. Unfortunately, too many don't care or understand that.

I know I'm not SUPPOSED to want to live in the back rooms, but does anyone know if I can get pizza delivered there? No rent. No bills. Just chilling in the liminal, uncanny horror of emptiness with some fragmented friends.

I just received such a thoughtful email and Google was trying to get me to autorespond with some lengthy genAI response. Let me write my own emails, damnit. If you really need a machine to think and talk for you, you need serious help. And I mean that.

Some folks treat writing stories like a job where they get paid by the word, and you can really tell.
