To all technical students and engineers in Europe. The US export control on LLMs is the first taste of what will become the new norm. Many people are calling for "radical measures" and that we need the equivalent of a Manhattan Project to create change in Europe. But this is not how change will happen. Change will never come top-down from a government. The state and EU can fund, but they cannot found it. That part is on us. You are the only ones who can change this. You are among the few people on this continent who actually know how to build foundational technology - LLMs, robotic AI, actuators from scratch, chip infrastructure, rocket engines, organoids. ETH, EPFL, TUM, École Polytechnique, KTH, Imperial and dozens more produce absurd talent every single year. And almost all of it talks itself out of building. We finish our degrees surrounded by such an incredible average that we're sure someone is always better at [your idea] - so who are we to start? I've seen so many friends at ETH think they need to "get more experience first" and take a job at Nvidia or Google and never do anything interesting again. Technology-driven companies aren't founded by the most qualified person. They're willed into existence by people who see what others do not and refuse to stop. The person who's "better than you" almost never does it. And as for experience, nothing will teach you how to build the thing like, well, just trying to build the thing. Our education is a chance most of the world will never have. There are people in Europe who have to worry about getting a job. We get to worry about finding our dream job. We're able to make bets that not many people can make or afford. It's nothing anybody expects you to do, but if you want a life filled with purpose, this is a unique kind of responsibility you can choose to step up to. So if you actually want to do something ambitious, how about changing a continent? If you really want change, you cannot wait for others. You are one of the few people who can create it. It starts with you.

Today is Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, representing eight decades of a man who has done more than anyone to hurt the West, elevate its enemies, and trap us in a post-truth nightmare. While he is certainly a symptom of a deeper political illness, he has actively made things much worse. Let us be clear that there is nothing to celebrate today, because Trump is the most traitorous, deeply corrupt, and overall worst president in the history of the US. He is a compromised, horrible human being who has lost the respect of anyone with half a brain. His deep ties as a best friend to Jeffrey Epstein prove he knew exactly what was going on behind closed doors. He is the lowest of the low. He has spent years threatening American allies, appeasing foreign enemies, and losing the reckless trade wars he started. His leadership has left Americans poorer, more stupid, more polarized, and trapped inside a decadent, ever more authoritarian joke of an administration that hurts the whole world. He is a traitor. His alignment with autocracy is clear in how he sides with Russia over Ukraine and China over Taiwan. He even systematically undermined domestic safety by installing a Russian asset as the Director of National Intelligence and an anti-science, anti-vaxx Russian asset as Health Secretary. No one is better than Trump at sabotaging the US. The only bright side to his birthday is that he is old, ensuring he will not be able to stay in power forever. He will never be missed by anyone with a brain and/or a heart, and if I believed in hell, I would seriously doubt it is bad enough for him

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

A 32-year-old mother brought her daughter to the lab on weekends so she could keep writing the code that would land humans on the moon. 400,000 feet above her, that same code became the only reason the mission did not abort. Her name is Margaret Hamilton. She was born in Indiana in 1936. She studied mathematics with a minor in philosophy. She taught herself to program at a time when the job she did had no name at all. In 1965 she became Director of the Software Engineering Division at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory. The lab had a contract with NASA to write the on-board flight software for Apollo. Hamilton led it. She gave the field its name. There was no term for what she did, so she coined one. Software engineering. Her colleagues laughed. Hardware was real engineering. Software was an afterthought. She insisted it deserved the same rigor. She was right. Here is the part that became history. July 20, 1969. The lunar module Eagle is minutes from the surface. Armstrong and Aldrin are descending. Then the computer starts flashing alarms. 1201. 1202. Red and yellow lights across the board. The computer was overloaded. A checklist error had left the rendezvous radar switched on during landing, flooding the machine with data it did not need. A lesser system would have frozen. With astronauts halfway to the surface, that meant a dead crew or an aborted landing. Hamilton's software did not freeze. She had built it to recognize when it was overwhelmed and throw away the low-priority tasks, so it could lock onto the one job that mattered: landing the spacecraft. The 1202 alarm was not a failure. It was her code announcing that it was shedding the unimportant work and keeping the crew alive. Mission Control knew how robust her system was. They told the astronauts to ignore the alarm and go. Three minutes later, a human stood on the moon. "I like to say not only was that the first human on the moon," Hamilton said, "but the first software to run on the moon." She did not stop there. She worked on Skylab, the first American space station. She wrote the early space shuttle software. In 1986 she left to found her own company, Hamilton Technologies. The concepts she pioneered are the foundation everything now runs on. Asynchronous software. Priority scheduling. Human-in-the-loop decision making. Every operating system, every aircraft, every system that simply cannot fail, runs on the principles she invented. Because she knew there was no second chance, and she built for it. In 2016, President Obama gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. "Our astronauts didn't have much time," he said, "but thankfully they had Margaret Hamilton." There is a famous photograph of her from 1969. A young woman, smiling, standing next to a stack of code listings printed on paper. The stack is taller than she is. That stack is the software that took humanity to the moon. She said it best herself. "There was no choice but to be pioneers. No time to be beginners." The phone in your hand runs on software engineering. She is the reason that phrase exists.

You have noticed that too. Google Search is getting worse. The results look professional but say nothing. The answers are longer but less useful. Every page reads like it was written by the same voice. You thought Google was broken. It is not broken. It is being replaced. Researchers published a paper at the ACM Web Conference 2026 proving what is happening. They call it Retrieval Collapse. Here is the mechanism in one sentence. AI-generated content is flooding the internet so fast that search engines are now showing you mostly AI-written pages. And the search engine cannot tell the difference. They ran a controlled experiment. They started with a pool of real, human-written web pages. Then they gradually added AI-generated content until it made up 67% of the pool. By that point, over 80% of the top search results were AI-generated. Not 67%. Over 80%. The ranking algorithm did not just let AI content in. It preferred it. The AI-written pages were better optimized, more fluent, and more keyword-rich than the human pages. They outranked the originals. Here is the part that makes this invisible. Answer accuracy stayed the same. The search results still looked correct. The information was still technically right. If you measured quality by accuracy alone, nothing appeared wrong. But source diversity collapsed. Nearly every result came from the same type of content. AI-written. AI-optimized. AI-structured. The human-written pages, the ones with original reporting, personal experience, and genuine expertise, were buried. The researchers describe a two-stage collapse. Stage one is Dominance. High-quality AI content silently takes over the top results. Everything looks fine. Accuracy is stable. Nobody notices. Stage two is Corruption. Once AI dominates the pipeline, adversarial and low-quality content starts slipping through. By then, the system is too dependent on synthetic sources to course-correct. A separate analysis found that 74.2% of newly published web pages now contain AI-generated content. Organic click-through rates on pages with AI summaries have dropped 61%. The human internet is being outranked by the machine internet. Model Collapse described what happens when AI trains on AI. The models get dumber. Retrieval Collapse describes what happens when search engines index AI. The results get emptier. Both are happening right now. At the same time. And neither one looks broken from the outside. The search engine still returns ten blue links. The links still load. The pages still answer your question. But the thing that used to make those answers trustworthy, a human who actually knew something, is being quietly replaced by a machine that sounds like it does.
