Assoc. Prof. of Applied Phycology at Univ. of Florida/IFAS @UFIFAS_FLREC. Research focuses on algae & cyanos, from basic to applied. Tweets are my own.
📢 48th Aquatic Weed Control Short Course in full swing at DoubleTree Orlando SeaWorld. Dr. Lyn Gettys, Associate Professor @UFIFASAgronomy at FLREC in Davie. Here a few highlights from this morning plenary session. #UFatWork#IFASResearch#IFASExtension
The @metsul issued a warning for Rio Grande do Sul due to extreme rainfall and the likelihood of floods. The forecast for some areas is 200 to 300 millimeters, or even higher. 65 municipalities affected.
Floridians are conditioned to hate #Algae. But to fight against issues such as #RedTide, you need a team that loves it. At @UFIFASftlaudREC, @algae_slayer & @vivalgae have curated 1000 strains, some with the potential to impact #Cancer treatments, and others as a source of #Vegan supplements!
🎉 Congrats Dr. @algae_slayer, he has been tenured and promoted to Associate Professor. He is a broadly trained phycologist working with both basic and applied algal research from Tropical to Polar Regions. #IFASResearch#UFatWork#FLREC
Must visit to see working waterfront (and have authentic Greek food), look at those sponges! One of Florida’s hundreds of specialty crops supported by @FloridaSeaGrant and @UF_IFAS research and extension
#Physicians: Be prepared for cyanobacterial blooms (blue-green algae) this summer. They can make people sick when they spend time in or near water like lakes and rivers. Check out CDC’s Physician Reference Card to learn the signs and symptoms:

CyanoSeq is a curated database of #cyanobacteria 16S rRNA sequences for taxonomic assignment of metabarcoding reads, and can also be used for #cyano systematics etc
Hey, just putting this out there again - if you want to learn about freshwater #redalgae l think this can help out! If you have any questions about these organisms, I am so happy to discuss! #phycologyfriday
The last days many samples of Benthic cyanobacterial mats on the coral reefs of Curaçao were collected by Dail Laughinghouse @algae_slayer and David Bertholdt @vivalgae and me to check the diversity of the mats. Very nice collaboration!!
