Florida Senate 2018 Bill Nelson improved upon Hillary Clinton’s 2016 performance in the Panhandle and central FL, as well as in Broward and West Palm Beach, but this couldn’t compensate for Scott’s considerable gains in Miami-Dade, which made Florida 1% more Republican by itself.
Election maps have one key problem. They shade by percentage, so if a candidate wins by 50 points in a county with a population of 2000 people, it is shaded in a very dark color. But this overstates the significance of that victory. (1/?)

Our maps don’t overstate population. We shade by the amount that a county contributed to the overall margin of the state. This way, population is not overrepresented, so a 5 point victory in New York City is darker than a 30 point victory in Rural County, USA. (2/?)

I think one of the most important, outstanding questions about this election, with big implications for 2020, is what went wrong for Democrats in Miami-Dade County
