What an special special evening, it was so surreal to hear the music live and arranged so beautifully with so much flavour. And what a gift to meet so many of you afterwards 🦊💖 Ty ✨ Ty ✨ to the team that put it together instagram.com/p/DVBWpqsiN1u/…
Thank you everyone for coming to see the TUNIC concert. It was very special for Janice and I to meet so many of you in person. I just wish we had more time to talk to everyone. Hopefully we get more chances to show our works in person in the future. ❤️🦊

Working on “Flux is On”, I had @lifeformed’s earlier sounds in mind-sounds of lightness, play, and innocence. This track uses arpeggiators which can have the challenge of sounding random or repetitive. The exercise for me is working with something that has a direction of its own.

Also, to make up for lost time, we also wanted to post some fun facts and tidbits about the tracks on TUNIC daily over the next week or so. So check back here for some of our thoughts during the 7 year production period of the game. Let us know if you have any specific questions!

Sometimes melodies can be bold & upfront, sometimes they can be more subtle, folded in notes between notes, inviting more of the listener’s own interpretations.

Working with arps reminds me of piano, guitar, and classical music bc while arpeggiators are associated with synths & modern music, arpeggio is a musical technique that’s been around forever. idk, i think that's kind of neat. lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…

A little bit of both: for sounds recorded out-and-about, they’re mostly because we just like the sound and then bring home to experiment with. For sounds recorded “in studio”, they’re often because we’re looking for a specific sound or curious how they’ll sound in a track.
How did you conceptualizar the sound palette? Did you say, “I need a synth sound, I’ll use these birds here to get it” or the reverse, you had sounds gathered and followed them?

Sometimes, we’d be looking for a sound to connect spaces, so we sampled a track or elements of it to use in a related track. ie, for “in-between” places like “Ancient Futures” there are remnants of adjacent spaces like “Redwood Colonnade" lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…

Another eg is "Descension" which plays in the space between the cathedral and the gauntlet battle. It samples a bit of the cathedral "Patron Saint of Astronomers" lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…

The most challenging track for @alsojanice and I was the main theme, To Far Shores. Making it was arduous, with over a hundred internal tracks, and we worked on it over 2 months. But the biggest challenge was learning how to untangle our conflicted feelings of creative ownership.

Which track challenged you the most to get it to the final release?

@lifeformed sent an early version of “The Weight of Rain” in 2018 and asked what kind of environment it made me think of

the way he builds a sense of environment with music amazes me. save for the “cave” aspect, the description it conjured in my mind was so close to what the west garden is today.

For example, to make the first minute of Subterra, I played hundreds of variations of some chords on a ukulele and recorded them. Then I layered them together and chopped them up every way I could think of, and glued them together with various effects: lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…

We used to have a lot of tools, but over the years we gradually minimized our setup, partly due to traveling a lot, but mostly just enjoying the way a minimal setup makes it easy to collaborate and jump into the flow when inspiration strikes

Hey! I would be very keen to learn more about your production environment - what sort of tools were most essential to you two while maintaining the creative flow (DAWs, synths, equipment?) Thank you for the unforgettable memory in the form of the TUNIC soundtrack :)

We get this question a lot but you may be surprised that Janice wrote Arcane Arcade and hasn't heard the Fez OST yet. I think the soundtracks to Fez, Dustforce and other games are part of a broader "hi-fi square wave sound" that has been popular in the 2010's.
Replying to @lifeformed
considering the many similarities between the games (down to the album art), was there any inspiration from fez while composing (beyond arcane arcade, at least)? (also redwood colonade is one of my favorite songs of all time, thank you for creating such a masterpiece!!!)

Thank you :) Forget to Forget was the very first track I made for TUNIC. I was listening to a lot of deep house back then, and I couldn't resist adding in the low-pass breakdown at the 3 min mark. lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…

Forget to Forget reaches past my fav on the OST and into the realms of one of the most beautiful songs ever for me - I love love love when a theme gets several iterations - could you share on how Forget/Remember/Memories all came to be ? thanks yall 🎶

in 2018 @lifeformed emailed these chords to me (A# F G# C C# D# -> G# D# F# B C# D#) i wanted to hear what they sounded like so i played them out which turned into the track "secret legend" lifeformed.bandcamp.com/trac…
