We’re looking into micro learning / micro courses via
@7tapsHq as an element of our CPD provision next year. Even if we don’t have time or budget for full CPD, hopefully microdosing professional learning through the year will be a first step to fixing the issue 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
At the moment, it is possible for a teacher to do basically no susbtantive CPD on aspects of their job other than safeguarding.
The "amount of professional reading or learning" that teachers should be doing is a good debate to have and I'm generally on the "more than currently" side.
Summaries aren't good enough. Clocking in and out and not keeping up isn't good enough. Of *course* leadership should be giving time and £££ for this (and maybe there should be national policy change), but in principle I don't think we expect enough of ourselves here.
My dad's a Dr and he reads the BMJ every week as well as his specialism journal - all in his own time. My wife is a dietitian and is expected to do a minimum amount of CPD annually, hers is normally part of her working hours.
We need to make time for this, but also to raise its importance. Learning, reading, keeping up with developments - a serious profession recognises the importance.
We also need to make sure that what people consume is actually of high quality. Too much teacher CPD and reading is not robust or evidence informed. This one, I don't know how to solve. But it needs to be done. All too often I'll go to a school and they will be implementing *bad ideas* that will never work - but somebody solid it to them.
