Some 25 Israeli principals and teachers have suffered sanctions for speaking out against the war. Freedom of expression is shrinking, and Israel is increasingly resembling a grotesque dictatorship. The case of Yael Levkovitz is a warning sign haaretz.com/israel-news/2025…

Following the deadliest year on record for the press in 2024, CPJ asked Palestinian journalist and past awardee Shrouq Al Aila to reflect on her experience reporting from Gaza since October 7, 2023. Unable to leave Gaza, Al Aila’s remarks were read at CPJ’s 2025 International Press Freedom Awards by Jon Williams, Fadi Mansour, Yesica Fisch, Humeyra Pamuk, and Rula Jebreal. “When the genocide began to subside, I felt something inside me rekindle — a quiet but certain faith in the power of journalism,” wrote Al Aila. “My colleagues and I are waiting now, with our cameras and our words, to document Gaza as it rises once again from the ruins, stronger, more beautiful, and unbroken.” Watch👇 youtu.be/PbX5LWUAjvs 📷: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

"Donald Trump’s claims that Mohammed bin Salman knew nothing about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi directly contradict a CIA report concluding the crown prince approved it. This deliberate whitewashing of the past — alongside an attempt to blame the victim — marks a new low for an administration that shows at every turn how little regard it has for truth or the free press. Trump's remark that 'things happen' and that 'a lot of people didn’t like' Khashoggi echoes the president’s broader efforts to minimize and justify attacks on the press." — @CPJMENA Regional Director Sara Qudah

Trump said on Tuesday that broadcasting licenses used by affiliates ABC should be "taken away" after he disagreed with a question posed by a reporter for the network. "I think the license should be taken away from ABC, because your news is so fake and it's so wrong," Trump said.

At the end of the day I'm not sure how much difference it makes. But it is striking to put out a budget that axes a luxury tax on yachts and adds a co-pay for refugee claimants accessing drugs and dental care.

The really cool thing about deep brain stimulation, though, is that in addition to jolting your brain this device eavesdrops on it, refining neurophysiological squiggles. And maybe this can improve our understanding of, and ways of treating, unwell brains. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

What this DBS experience and the many scans and checkups reminded me, though, was the importance of treating patients as humans no matter the intervention. I was treated with such exceptional care. Not everyone needs or wants holes in their head. Everyone deserves compassion.
