My new paper in @IJHPEditors explores cuts to housing benefit for private renters in England– finding that cuts led to a statistically significant increase in overcrowding of 5%, or an additional ~75,000 households living in overcrowded homes bit.ly/2WEnF0m (open access)
Has tenancy law reform caused disinvestment in the rental market? Not so far, but maybe it should? …could encourage incompetent landlords to cash out of sector? Excellent new research by @dr_chris_martin and colleagues. #rentinginAustralia@AHURI_Research
Here's a quick thread about government, social housing and the lack of regulation to ensure tenants have some protection when housing management goes wrong. Because... well... there is a certain level of hypocrisy from current ministers which can't be left unaddressed
Appalled by news today of a pilot programme with GPs 'prescribing' heating for patients with health conditions likely to be made worse by cold and damp. Further medicalising poverty and loading problems onto the NHS because of the failure of other parts of the system. 1/7
I’ve been collaborating on this piece with @GuardianAus for months, and I could be more excited to have it out in the open. Please read and share to highlight the urgent need for better protections for renters (and you’ll understand my PhD topic) theguardian.com/australia-ne…
Lots to take from this morning's closing statements at the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, but this from Danny Friedman KC is probably worth sharing. The inquiry has shown a world absent empathy. As well as all the technical stuff, that needs to change
.@_HealthyCities_ and my new paper exploring the mental health impacts of no longer living in a home that is warm enough is available now (open access, pre-proof). Taking a social harm perspective we find that... sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
transitioning into living in a cold home is associated with a doubling of the risk of severe mental distress for those who previously had no mental health symptoms, and a tripling in the risk for those who were previously on the borderline of mental distress
re-sharing the graph with alt-text. sorry for not doing this before!
ALT Forest plot-style graph showing the odds ratios for increased risk of severe mental distress after entry into cold housing. Models are reported for two populations: the first had borderline (but not severe) mental distress levels at wave 1 of survey, the other had mental distress at wave 1 of the survey. Four models are reported for each population: a baseline model (no control variables), a model including demographic variables, a model including housing as well as demographic variables, and a model including demographic, housing and financial variables. This last model, including all controlling variables, results in an odds ratio of around 2 for the population with no prior mental distress and over 3 for those with prior mental distress.
Some really interesting points about data collection for rental applications and the power imbalance in renting in Australia (and elsewhere)

I feel very grateful to have been appointed a Professor @DSPI @UniofOxford and want to express my appreciation for all those ppl who have supported me. But I would also like to reflect on further education in the UK bc I wouldn't have achieved this w/out one of those colleges
New paper out today - Housing inequality: a systematic scoping review. An outstanding first paper from @housingishome Housing inequality is about much more than housing… (free link) bitly.ws/udMX
What’s driving England’s housing crisis?
In part, it’s because we’re now a country of *multiple* home ownership and private renters.
In the last 20 years the proportion of adults owning multiple homes doubled, the %s of 16-34 y/os buying a home almost halved. 🏘️🧵
ALT Graph entitled: Since 2000 the number of adults who own multiple dwellings more than doubled, at the expense of younger audlts; the number of 16-34 y/os buying or owning their own home has almost halved. It shows the number of adults aged 16-34 owning their home has fallen by 15m between 2000 and 2020, and the numbers of adults owning multiple homes has increased by 1.7m over the same period.
All housing tenures include some crap homes, but some tenures are far more likely to provide crap homes than others.
Incentives in the PRS are clearly broken, especially where homes are older. Landlords won't invest if benefits accrue to tenants who can't afford to pay more.
