Do you know whats funny? every white person who’d watched hunger games, rooted for the districts’ rebellion against their oppressor and cried at this scene where katniss says the capital just bombed a hospital, but when this happened in the real world yall rooted for the bad guy

#TheMarvels is the first Marvel movie to feature not just all-female leads but a female villain (Zawe Ashton plays Dar-Benn), as well. DaCosta, 33, is the youngest filmmaker to helm an MCU release. She’s also the first Black woman to do so. “Day to day, I don’t really think about it. But it is nice to finally have a Black woman directing one — it just happens to be me,” DaCosta says via APNews

I wish there were more photographers who do what I do. So many are in their own bubble and will snub you when you want to network/collaborate. It’s giving “crabs in a bucket”, but who’s going to lead the path when we are gone? What are we doing to build the next generation? ⏭

So photographers w/ connections & other elites in this industry, I challenge you. Dare to dream outside the box. Step out of your comfort zone and hire those you’ve been sleeping on. Take a risk on the new kid, let someone outside your circle assist you. Turn dreams into reality.
A lot of photographers stay in a close knit circle & majority editors work in tandem within that elite circle. But do you ever think about how many bridges towards the future you have burned? There is so much unique talent in this world. How can we stand to let it go to waste?⏭

This is a billion dollar industry. There is so much wealth & connections to go around. But only the same 5-6 photographers carry it all.And for Black creatives in this industry, only the same 5 cis Black men who work w/ all white & non Black business partners. This is your legacy?⏭
New York Times, Bloomberg & more. All of these jobs I had complete creative control over & had access to hire whoever I wanted. If all these companies gave me this much freedom, what’s stopping you from helping the communities that need it?⏭

I did all this without the help of any agency. Just me & my long term business partner LaurenK who had a dream to build a better world for Black creatives. Specifically Queer, Trans, & Non-Men. The thing is, this can be done. But the issue is, who else will carry this with us? ⏭
It took me 5 years to be where I am now. But in that time, w/ my hard work & connections, I made a sponsored space where Black creators could connect&create for free, learn from high ranking professionals, teach financial literacy, brought in celebrities to interact…⏭
I will never forget this interaction in 2016. When I first became a photographer, there was a film artist I looked up to. I wanted to learn from him & shared my work. He laughed at me and told me I was the “worst photographer he ever met” & “no model or anyone will work w/ u”⏭

That really stuck w/ me when he said that. After, I made a vow that when I got better my work would be set with genuine intention, love & safety where everyone could feel welcome. I didn’t want anyone to feel what I felt that day. So I dedicated myself to never being like him.⏭
Since I’ve been harassed about this for 2 years now, I’m going to clear the air. The fact is on social media. None of you “know” me. You only know the 10% I display on a screen. When Black Trans folk ask for mutual aid, you perceive us as these lazy bums who deserve to be ->

So the next time you think you need to tell a Black Trans person to “get up and work”, don’t. I challenge you to spread more kindness or walk away. Because the truth is, you don’t know everything. And we don’t owe you everything either.

Our structure of capitalism in America isn’t designed for everyone to be independent. Wouldn’t that be nice though? People need help and that’s okay. It’s normal. Community is everything and I am so grateful for mine. Let’s spread more kindness today and every day. Thank you❤️
