We learned today that the MA legislature - Joint Committee on Election Laws voted to not move the bill to REINSTATE the right to vote to incarcerated people. Registered voters of the Commonwealth of MA should have the right to vote no matter where they live. Taking the right to vote away from incarcerated people in 2020 was an act of oppression and control that disproportionately affects black and brown communities and is tantamount to further entrenching a caste system in the state.

62 years ago today, Gideon v. Wainwright established the right to counsel for those charged with a crime Public defenders are vital to ensuring that people have representation in the legal system. Unfortunately, all too often, public defense systems are underfunded & overworked.
It's no secret that the system targets the poor. That's what makes public defense systems so important.

The thing about philanthropy is that those individuals and organizations that are funded through philanthropic channels are doing some of the hardest work on the planet .. seeking justice and fairness and equity .., and that job is a real job.
