not defending ChatGPT about which I know virtually nothing but what makes you think that many/most human beings are not programmed to think/believe/utter formulaic platitudes if not outright misinformation? Today I asked my class the question “how would you define magic” and in what seemed like less than a second a ChatGPT voice proclaimed “the definition of magic is….” until the student defused it. The class collectedly gasped. One exclaimed “that’s wild”. I felt…numb?

there’s obviously a nostalgic “humanist” reading of people falling in love with AI bots (ie. everyone is so desperate for any connection now, etc) but the antihumanist one feels correct: humans have always fallen in love with flat/partial/projective/“machinic” qualities in others

I refuse to believe that people read “for the aesthetic” and/or read in public spaces (other than libraries) for attention. I see people reading in public spaces all the time and I have never even once had that impression.
