Thanks to @AcademicChatter I got a whole bunch of new followers yesterday. Seems like a good time to officially introduce myself here so folks can decide if they want to stick around or not. Basic info about who I am and what I do can be found here annaboconnell.com
Yes! For this to work we need 2 things: (1) real time feedback about our interpersonal & mentorship effectiveness. (2) both training & support to have these convos. Please allow me to elaborate in an obnoxiously long thread...
.. Finally: everyone should have access to support for difficult convos or when communication has already broken down. This support should be informed by principles of effective communication & conflict management, which means additional training for anyone in a leadership role..
.. I acknowledge that what I'm advocating for represents even more training for which no one has time. But as someone who has been through this type of training and who uses these principles in my own work, I think the benefits far outweigh the cost of investing in this approach.
Yes! Also no one can take away what you have learned. It can help to see that what we call "failure" is really progress via a different path towards our original goal or - maybe (!) towards something else, something better, that we can't see just yet. @AcademicChatter
Failure can be an isolating experience, but you are not alone. Even if people don't talk about it often enough, you are surrounded by people who have felt the pain of failure and who are coping with fear of future failure.
All of #academia should be operating under this principle:
“There are a lot of brilliant people in this country. I completely reject the notion that his brilliance is so singular and critical to the nation that his behavior is excusable.”

Wrapping up a @CIMERproject Facilitator Training today. This group's commitment to improving #mentoring in #Academia is truly inspiring. Big thanks to the inimitable @Dr_DianaAzurdia for co-facilitating with me, I had fun & learned a lot. Great way to close out #MentoringMonth!
It’s official!!! @BarneyGrahamMD & I are Federal Employees of the Year. Tonight, we will accept the “Sammie Award” following an intro from Dr. Fauci - a gratifying moment given our recent re-positioning from @NIH.
Here’s to public service forever even from our new posts. 💫 🥂
We are all really just people, standing in front of colleagues, asking to be seen. Interpersonal communication skills (perspective taking, listening for understand, finding mutual purpose) can be learned & should be a priority in #academia, as important as ethics.
