At 23 years old Dad started noting down his compositions with String Quartet no 1, Opus 1, in the back of an address book. The handwriting grows frailer as the list progresses and ends with Op 185 ‘Blessed Lord’ in 2018 when he was 91. What a creative life.

This was the oldest working cinema in the UK. Glenbrook Property bought it, shut it down and are letting it rot. We’ve had more than 2 years of politicians watching it rot. Flatpack Festivals have proposed an alternative rescue plan. Will our new council leaders broker it?

Beautiful day at Plas Brondanw, home of Clough Williams Ellis. That familiar colour paintwork so redolent of @Portmeirion. I wonder what the shade is called…

Sorry about the wonkiness… I came across this beautiful poem about #ImogenHolst in a collection by Edward Lowbury inspired by visits to Aldeburgh Festival. He was such a talented poet as well as a very eminent pathologist and bacteriologist. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward…

Cellist Florence Hooton gave many important British music premieres in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, including Oration by Frank Bridge on 18 January 1936, after the work had been turned down by Felix Salmond. Her last public performance was in 1978 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floren…

Thanks to listeners, producers and @MannGeorgia for including There is no rose in yesterday’s Playlister on @BBCRadio3 I did a thread about Dad’s setting a while back. Here it is again in case it’s of interest.
There is no rose 🧵 1/ Dad wrote his setting in 1954 at the request of Novello’s who asked him for a more contemplative work following the success of the lively Torches. I found this manuscript with publisher’s edits when going through his archive.

Wonderful Dvořàk day - first the museum in Prague, and then a joyous visit to his country house, Viilla Rusalka - hosted by his charming great-great-grandson Petr. Thrilling to see his everyday objects - eg his (tiny!) bed, dining-table, work desk and… his sugar and coffee jars!

This coming Sunday I'll be giving a talk on the first book of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier at the @V_and_A - and there'll be quite a few historical examples as well as discussion of some of the instruments in the museum's collection. Come heckle! vam.ac.uk/event/QEjBAy1kpEK/…
