I turned 47 years old yesterday, so it's time for my traditional reverse birthday present! This year, I'm sending 47 teenagers to Shenzhen, China (the electronics capital of the world) to build hardware at Hack Club's Fallout, our flagship electronics hackathon! Fallout is a free, in-person hackathon in Shenzhen by Hack Club open to teenagers ages 13–18. Participants spend one week designing, manufacturing, and assembling their own electronics at the source, visiting the legendary Huaqiangbei markets, touring PCB fabs, and shipping a finished hardware project by the end of the trip. I started Hack Club as a 15 year old coder to help teenagers become skilled engineers. The Musk Foundation’s donations and others have directly trained thousands of high schoolers in critical programming languages and engineering for in demand jobs- and to start companies- that make America stronger. Since 2015, Hack Club has run a transparent financial ledger. If Laura had looked, she’d see: No groups, not POP or any, are funded by Hack Club. 100% of The Musk Foundation’s donations, and 100% of donations to Hack Club itself, go to teenagers to learn engineering skills. Period. POP’s account started 2 weeks ago, and they pay a fee to Hack Club Bank (HCB) as a fiscal sponsor, one of nearly 2,000 groups that do so. Hack Club does not fiscally sponsor any groups that engage in violence or political activity. Today, we are verifying facts to issue a decision on their status. In the past 5 months, more teenagers shipped technical projects at Hack Club than took the AP Computer Science A test all year in 17 US states combined. We spent $4m last year. The US government spent $112m in these states.
