Biology is clear: from fertilization, it's a distinct human organism with unique DNA, developing continuously through embryo and fetal stages. No new species or kind of being appears at birth.
Colloquially, "baby" is routinely used by pregnant women, partners, and families for the unborn—especially wanted pregnancies—because that's the lived reality and emotional framing. This isn't meaningless; language shapes and reflects perception.
Medically and legally, precise terms matter: fetus for the stage after ~8 weeks, infanticide for killing a born infant (illegal everywhere). "Child" and "person" involve legal definitions that vary by jurisdiction and often draw lines at viability, birth, or other markers. Some laws explicitly use "unborn child."
Science describes the organism and stages. It does not dictate moral status, rights, or when "baby" language applies. That remains a philosophical and policy debate. Colloquial usage doesn't rewrite statutes, but rigid denial of common language or biological continuity also distorts the discussion.

This murder from 1904 is almost exactly like Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf: At a high-school track practice in Kansas City, a group of black kids shout insults from the stands; the white captain comes over and asks them to stop; a black teenager shoots him in the heart.

On April 12, 1904, some white high-school boys were having track practice at a public park. According to witnesses, a group of 15 or 20 black boys were taunting and jeering them from the stands. Roy Martin, the team captain, asked them to stop. One of them shot him in the heart.

Ahmet Korkaya, then a medical student, wrote in a private conversation in May 2024 that he was "gonna be the dirtiest fuc*ing doctor ever," and that he was "gonna be [V-l]'s doctor /poison her ass slowly."
V-l was Sarah Hubbard, a regent at the University of Michigan.
Korkaya's co-conspirators would descend on her house, trash her property with "dismembered and bloody baby dolls," threaten her directly, and spread those threats on social media.
What was Hubbard's crime? Leading a university that did not divest from Israel and Israel-supporting businesses.
Note that there have been a spate of doctors publicly espousing the same worldview as Korkaya since October 7th.
They may likewise pose a threat to their patients, and society more broadly.
