ALT Supernovae are incredibly luminous events that occur when a star dies. These are some of the brightest things in the universe, sometimes outshining their host galaxy!

ALT How do we detect neutrinos that originate from supernovae? When the neutrinos hit the matter inside one of our detectors, they release a charged particle. It's that charged particle that we detect. So, we actually don't directly detect neutrinos. We detect the aftermath of their collisions!

ALT Neutrinos interact through the "weak" force. This means that when they are produced in the core of a star, they don't really interact with anything else and travel right out of the star. This is both a blessing and a curse because, although neutrinos make it out of a star easily, they are extremely difficult to detect here on Earth.
