This idea of DIY sustainability is so interesting - the dream is all well and good, but if there's a way to a solid career outside the 'industry' then everyone benefits...musicians and listeners.

Interesting thread here, and a fair point well made. So do we think there any viable route for music makers to build a paying fanbase *outside* the clutches of the music industry - can anybody think of any examples? @Benefitstheband ? @eli1ah ?
