It’s official: We have a contract!
@appmcjguild members overwhelmingly approved our new contract with a 97% ratification vote and 92% turnout.
We’re also thrilled that our comrades and strike vote siblings @hvnewsguild also ratified their contract today.
On January 9, ICE arrested a member of our union, the Minnesota Newspaper & Communications Guild, as part of Operation Metro Surge.
He has been transferred to a detention facility in Texas, where he is awaiting action on his petition for habeas corpus: newsguild.org/guild-member-d…
This year we’ve seen employers pile on the AI-generated slop in our workplaces. In many cases, these AI deployments undermine the editorial ethics and standards journalists at @newsguild strive to uphold. 1/
Media companies are undermining public trust with unethical AI in newsrooms. We’re proud to join @newsguild in sounding the alarm! Join the #NewsNotSlop campaign and help us kick off a Week of Action on AI, Dec. 1–5. This fight is going to take all of us! newsnotslop.org/
Workers CAN regulate AI with strong contract language. Full stop.
Unionized journalists just proved this at POLITICO. @penguild
ALT Graphic announcing that NiemanLab reported Politico management violated AI adoption safeguards. Large text reads: “NewsGuild Journalists won their AI arbitration against POLITICO… but why does that matter?” Below is a red button stating “Let’s talk about it.” At the bottom are the logos for The NewsGuild and “News Not Slop.”
ALT Graphic explaining the significance of the AI arbitration ruling. Section heading reads: “The ruling marks one of the first major tests of an AI clause in a newsroom union contract.” Social media screenshots quote PEN Guild posts discussing Politico’s use of AI tools and emphasizing that AI isn’t held to human editorial standards. Large red box states that NewsGuild journalists fought for AI protections because robots are not subject to the same editorial rigor.
ALT Graphic stating that the Politico arbitration proves union contracts protect workers from unethical AI implementation. A large quote from the US Congressional Research Service notes that no broad federal AI regulatory framework exists. Text below explains that government hasn’t caught up to regulating AI, leaving workers vulnerable to cost-cutting by employers.
ALT Graphic with heading “This is a blueprint for workers everywhere.” Text explains that strong contract language on AI at Politico sets a model for all industries facing unregulated AI. Another line reads: “If workers can enforce AI protections here, we can enforce them anywhere.” Below is a photo of a woman holding a megaphone at a labor rally, and a “News Not Slop” block inviting viewers to sign a petition.
AI’s Impact on Editorial Standards and Ethics is today’s theme in our #newsnotslop campaign. Be sure to follow @penguild and be part of the conversation, starting at noon ET. @newsguild
“AI is a tool that can support our work but there’s no AI function that can replace a human’s ability to fully consider journalism’s ethical implications or to approach an investigation with thoughtfulness and integrity.” Mark Olalde of @propublicaguild....
Solidarity forever with The Record Guild.
Nearly a quarter of their members earn less than $40,000 annually — a poverty-level wage anywhere in New Jersey, let alone North Jersey.
Gannett management should be ashamed that it’s come to this.
READY TO WALK: @therecordguild has voted to authorize a walkout, fed up with @Gannett's refusal agree to a fair contract with living wages, despite three years of bargaining. More here....

This is a historic moment for our newsrooms. We’ve won a contract that not only gives many of our members life-changing raises and job security provisions, but raises the floor for what’s possible in a Gannett newsroom.
We hope this contract serves as inspiration for other Gannett workers to stop asking nicely and begin using their collective power to demand what they deserve.
Solidarity forever!

Both @hvnewsguild and @appmcjguild have ratified their contracts! @hvnewsguild did so unanimously with 97% turnout and 97% of @appmcjguild members who voted, voted to approve. Congrats to them!
WALKOUT AVERTED: Our @hvnewsguild and @appmcjguild have tentative agreements on their first contracts, which lift wages, provide job security and strengthen local news. More here......nyguild.org/post/walkout-ave…
We did it.
Last week, @appmcjguild members voted 94% in a strike vote. 24 hours later, we reached a handshake deal on a contract (and @hvnewsguild the day after).
Strikes work.
Breaking news: WE WON!!!!!!!!
We've reached a tentative agreement with Gannett on a 2-year deal with strong salary floors and delivers life-changing raises to many of our members.
We’re also thrilled for our @hvnewsguild comrades, who also reached a TA.

Excited that I’ll be able to afford furniture now!
Many thanks to our union reps and leadership, as their work and effort predate my time with the APP and create a better future for the newspaper.

There are a lot of lessons we've learned in this 3.5-year fight, but here's the most important one:
Strikes work.
On 2/24 we announced a 95% strike authorization vote among us and @hvnewsguild membership.
We reached the framework of a deal 24 hours later, and HVNG on 2/26.
We plan on ratifying our new contract (!) this week and celebrating this tremendous victory shortly thereafter.
Thank you to our union comrades, media/journalism colleagues and, most importantly, our readers for having our backs throughout this fight.
Solidarity forever!
