Marco Rubio, who portrays himself as a defender of "freedom of speech," reveals himself here as a laughable hypocrite of the highest order. While he accuses Europe of practicing "extraterritorial censorship"—because democratic states want to regulate hate speech, disinformation, and incitement—his own Trump administration is conducting a systematic attack on precisely these freedoms in the US.
This is not a fight against censorship; this is pure revenge politics and an authoritarian show of force: The Trump administration has already revoked or blocked thousands of visas for international students simply because they protested against the genocide in Gaza or criticized Israel. Social media monitoring for visa applications is being massively expanded, fact-checkers and content moderators are being defamed as "censors" and barred from entering the country. Journalists, activists, and critics of the regime are being harassed, while right-wing agitators and conspiracy theorists have free rein.
Rubio is now threatening visa bans for "leading figures in the global censorship-industry complex"—a term straight out of the authoritarian lexicon. This isn't about protecting freedom of speech; it's an attempt to intimidate foreign regulations while simultaneously silencing any criticism at home of Trump, Israel, or his own policies.
A state that persecutes dissidents, misuses visas as a political weapon, and only defends freedom of speech when it serves its own agenda is indeed sliding into autocracy. Rubio and Trump prove it every day.
