hello, we have seen a clip of YJ going around and we wanted to explain the nuance of the word “sexy”. it’s understandable as to why people feel uncomfortable by it because to many of us, the word “sexy” carries a sexual undertone. however, the word “sexy” in korea carries a significantly less sexual undertone and is rather used as calling someone attractive, handsome and/or cool. we would never defend something that is wholeheartedly weird. we won’t bash those who feel uncomfortable because again, most people aren’t aware that the term carries different undertones.

from a korean ✌️
I'd like to clarify the word "sexy" in the context of the Korean language/culture. Yes, when you go to the Korean dictionary and search up the term, you'll get the definition "sexual attraction". However, the term is commonly used among Koreans outside of its literal definition

you guys can either listen to people who actually speak the language or keep going with what you believe is true. if you’re gonna waste your time by quoting asking the same damn thing that has been explained in this thread 500 times, you’ll be blocked. it’s not being afraid of criticism, it’s being tired that y’all are so close-minded and refuse to listen to people who speak the same language and use the same word in a similar sense! i’m pretty sure hearing an explanation from people who actually speak the language would know what’s true. but i digress 🤷‍♀️

In Korea, the word sexy has a more comprehensive meaning. We use it to see cute or silly animals, to see delicious food(called ‘sexy food’), and when we see smart people(called 뇌섹남,뇌섹녀). It means that the brain is sexy. But no one thinks it has a sexual connotation to animals, food, or the brain. The meaning of words changes little by little in each culture. Please understand our culture.

YJ was born and raised in korea. he is not american. he lived there for TWO years when he was 9 years old. he knows english very well, but he is not 100% fluent. a lot of kpop stans hold any idol that know a good amount of english to a higher standard than others. you won’t even listen to native koreans explaining the situation so there’s no point in trying to explain. you can interpret however you want, but stop pretending as if the word can’t have nuance only because you only view it in one way. YJ was raised in korea, surrounded by korean culture, slang and more. holding him to this high standard of “he should know better!” because he knows a fair amount of english is..? knowing english ≠ knowing all cultural differences and how a common phrase he’s known for years living in korea could be viewed as something terrible in other places.

him knowing english is something that keeps being used against him to prove that “he should know better”. a lot of you have this idea that any idol that understands english must be chronically online and that’s not true at all. it’s just not fair to continuously hold idols who are familiar with the LANGUAGE to this higher standard than others. koreans use the word “sexy” to describe anything, even food, even someone’s brain.. feel however you’d like but at least listen to actual koreans telling you how there is in fact nuance and what he said was not said in the disgusting way you think it was said. stop throwing serious accusations around.

"Sexy" is a common reaction word used to describe many things without indicating sexual attraction. For example, we use "뇌섹남" (sexy brain) to describe someone smart. "요섹남" (sexy while cooking) is a compliment for calling them cool when cooking.

또또 외국인들이 한국의 언어와 문화를 아예 이해할려고 하지도 않고 그저 누군가를 억까할려고 헛소문 퍼트리는거 지겹다

What people need to acknowledge is that translation isn’t always 1:1. People need to stop treating translated words as exact equivalents, because a term in another language can carry a completely different nuance and does not automatically have the same implications it has in English. Discomfort is understandable, but so is recognizing that meaning, intent, and cultural usage can differ across languages and contexts 🫩 Please do your research before jumping to the worst possible conclusions and if you’re looking for reliable information, solo stans should be the last people you’re taking it from
